TRINITRON TUBE
2. Introduction
•The Trinitron or three in-line cathodes colour picture tube was
developed by ‘SONY’ Corporation of Japan around 1970.
•Trinitron signified the technology that Sony had inside its
screen, and the logo became a mark of quality.
•The Trinitron design incorporates two unique features: the
single-gun three-cathode picture tube, and the vertically
aligned aperture grille.
3. Construction
• This simplifies constructional problems since only one
electron gun assembly is to be accommodated.
• The three phosphor triads are arranged in vertical strips.
• Each strip is only a few thousand of a centimetre wide.
• A metal aperture grille like mask is provided very close to
the screen.
• It has one vertical slot for each phosphor triad.
4. The grille is easy to manufacture and has greater
electron transparency as compared to both delta-gun
and P.I.L. tubes.
The beam and mask structure, together with
constructional and focusing details of the Trinitron
shown in Figure.
5. • The single gun consists of a long-necked tube with a single
electrode at its base, flaring out into a horizontally-aligned
rectangular shape with three vertically-aligned
rectangular cathodes inside
• Each cathode is fed the
amplified signal from one of
the decoded RGB signals.
• The electrons from the
cathodes are all aimed toward
a single point at the back of
the screen where they hit the
aperture grille, a steel sheet
with vertical slots cut in it.
Working
6. • Due to the slight separation of the cathodes at the back
of the tube, the three beams approach the grille at
slightly different angles.
• When they pass through the grille they retain this angle,
hitting their individual coloured phosphors that are
deposited in vertical stripes on the inside of the faceplate.
• The main purpose of the grille is to ensure that each
beam strikes only the phosphor stripes for its colour,
much as does a shadow mask. However, unlike a shadow
mask, there are essentially no obstructions along each
entire phosphor stripe
7. Advantages
• Improved Vertical Resolution.
• Controls are only 6 against 12 in Delta gun and PIL
Picture Tube.
• Sharper Focus and Brightest Picture.
• No Problem of convergence adjustment during
Servicing.
• Great Transparency for electron beam is about 80%
against 20% of delta gun and 50% of PIL Picture
Tube.
