Chin-length hair is having a major moment in Hollywood now, with everyone from Mindy Kaling to Sarah Hyland rocking the short crop. So is it right for you? Most likely, says Rodney Cutler, Redken brand ambassador and owner of Cutler/Redken Salons. "Everyone can pull off a chin-length cut, but I would use caution if you have a very round face," he warns. "It's not always the most flattering style." Regardless, if you're thinking of going short, "have a thorough consultation with your stylist to determine what type of cut is best for your face shape—whether that's a layered look, A-line shape, or a fringed style."
Once you've determined which cut is best, you're going to need some styling advice. Of-the-moment bob hairstyles fall into two camps: either beachy and wavy or structured and sleek. "Traditional curls at this particular length can seem very dated," says Cutler. "Think Shirley Temple." For a wavy finish, pick products designed to give you a tousled look. Try Redken Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray ($22, ulta.com) or Tresemme Perfectly Undone Wave Creation Sea Foam ($5, target.com). "You want your hair to look lived-in, the second-day look," explains Cutler. For sleeker styles, he recommends using a dry shampoo at the root of the hair to absorb oil on your scalp while also adding volume and movement. "This style is all about the texture, so stay away from products that make your hair too wet or crunchy-looking—meaning toss the gel."
