- Typical scenarios addressed by embodiments of the present invention include situations where the volume at the start of playback is higher than the volume the user was expecting or desiring. This can be addressed by accelerating a volume decrease request from the user (i.e., using a more aggressive mapping between the user input and the volume decrease). The acceleration can be continued during the entire decrease request, or can be diminished or stopped once the volume has fallen below a given level.
- the user can specify override parameters as part of configuring the device.
- a volume that is unexpectedly low at the start of playback also presents challenges.
- a user may want to bring the volume up to a reasonably audible level quickly so as not to miss too much of the initial playback, but there is the danger of overshooting and ending up with an overly high volume. This can be addressed by accelerating the increase for volumes up to a certain threshold and then diminishing or stopping the volume increase once the volume reaches that threshold.
- the default profile can specify a decelerated volume increase for a range of volumes without any accelerated volume increase.
- the connections between the elements can be wired or wireless.
- user input device 7 can be mounted on a remote control unit that communicates with volume control mechanism 5 using an infrared or an RF communications protocol.

- FIG. 1E shows a configuration where audio source 2 and audio output device 3 are less tightly associated with the remaining elements, for example where volume control mechanism 5 and user input device 7 are tightly associated. Examples are discrete audio systems, computers, and other systems where the enhanced volume control is a stand-alone accessory.
- FIGS. 1B-1E underscore the fact that embodiments of the present invention can be deployed in a wide variety of environments. While much of the following description refers to a portable device such as a portable media device (“PMD”), there is no need to consider the invention to be limited to portable devices, much less PMDs. Rather, embodiments of the present invention can find applicability to any device or system that is capable of outputting audio subject to user control of the output volume.

- a volume control register 65 that receives a volume level signal and effects the appropriate volume control.
- volume level signal that is communicated to volume control register 65 can be controlled by a user manipulating an interface element, with the user's actions converted by a user input signal generator 70 into an electrical signal representing the user's actions.
- This signal which represents a volume change request, is then converted or mapped by a volume level change engine 75 having associated volume change data 75 ′ that supports default mapping and override mapping as determined by an override control 80 .
- the override mapping feature can be enabled and disabled as a matter of user preference.
- Volume change data 75 ′ can include, for example, parameter values, lookup tables, and the like to support the default mapping and one or more override mappings, as will be described in greater detail below.
- Override control 80 determines which mapping is to be applied to the signal from user input signal generator 70 , for example by switching from override mapping to default mapping after T Override has elapsed from the start of playback.
- the device can be considered to be in a selected one of first and second volume control states (referred to as default and override states).
- Each volume control state can be considered to be characterized by a different mapping of volume change requests.
- Additional embodiments of the present invention can include more than two volume control states. Further, the transition from one state to another need not be abrupt; rather override control 80 can be configured to provide a gradual transition from the override mapping to the default mapping.
- override control 80 can cause volume level change engine 75 to prevent signals from passing at the start of playback, and only allow signals to pass in response to a volume change request, with the mapping depending on the elapsed time.
- the volume level change engine can be initialized with the current volume setting and combine the current volume with the user-generated signals to provide absolute volume levels rather than specified volume level changes.
- Embodiments of the present invention can be used with any electronic volume control mechanism.
- the user turns a knob, and a potentiometer modifies an electrical signal in a manner that depends on the position of the knob. For example, if the knob is connected to a potentiometer that is connected as a voltage divider, the output signal is a voltage that is a fraction of the input signal.
- the potentiometer may have a logarithmic profile that represents the human aural response so that equal amounts of rotation would lead to what would be perceived as equal changes in volume.
- a user gesture for example moving a finger along a circular path while engaged with a scroll wheel (e.g., scroll wheel 25 ), generates an electrical signal that is communicated to circuitry or software that controls the output volume.
- Other user interface controllers can be used to request a volume change.
- a user may control volume by manipulating a displayed slider, by pressing volume Up/Down buttons (physical switches or displayed buttons), by gesturing on a touch pad, to name a few known ways.
- volume level change engine 75 could impose a logarithmic mapping as mentioned above.
- volume control register 65 user input signal generator 70 , volume level change engine 75 , and override control 80 can be separate hardware components, software components, or a combination. To the extent that some of these are implemented in software, the code that is executed can be stored in storage subsystem 50 .
- the signal provided by user input signal generator 70 is referred to as the motion signal, even though some of the user actions (e.g., button presses, voice commands) do not entail movement of an actuator or a finger where the distance of the movement has significance.
- Volume control register 65 user input signal generator 70 , volume level change engine 75 , and override control 80 are drawn as separate elements, the final output of which provides a volume level signal to playback engine 60 . This is for convenience only. Depending on the implementation, some of these elements could be more tightly integrated into the playback engine. Further, volume control register 65 , volume level change engine 75 , and override control 80 represent one way of implementing the functionality of volume control mechanism 5 shown in FIGS. 1A-1E .
- FIG. 3 is a circuit block diagram of a device according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- PMD 10 will be used, it being understood that PMDs and other devices according to embodiments of the present invention do not need to contain all the components shown, and further that they may contain additional components.

- acceleration/deceleration profiles may depend on a number of considerations. For example, a more aggressive accelerated decrease in volume level can be used when the PMD is playing back through headphones, since user discomfort can be a greater consideration with headphones than with speakers. Since some PMD models can sense when they are connected to speakers, this can be done automatically.
- embodiments of the present invention can also provide near-instantaneous volume decrease or increase to a predetermined level. For example, the mapping shown in FIG. 5C can be modified so that an initial segment of the graph is vertical (i.e., any volume decrease request during the override interval results in a substantially immediate drop to a lower volume.
- volume level change engine 75 can be provided with absolute volume information before playback starts. In those embodiments of the present invention where volume level change engine 75 provides an absolute volume level rather than volume level increments, this would already be taken into account.
- Different embodiments of the present invention can use different combinations of the override mappings shown for volume increase requests and volume decrease requests. Thus, for example, a particular embodiment can use any one of the mappings shown in FIGS. 5A , 5 B, and 5 C, combined with any of the mappings shown in 6 A, 6 B, and 6 C.
