UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
YVILLIAM H. ZORGER, OF SADORUS, ILLINOIS.
FINGER-BOARD FOR VIOLlNS, GUITARS, MANDOLINS, BANJOS, AND KlNDRED INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,698, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed June 13,1891- Serial No. 396,155. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. ZORGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sadorus, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charts and Finger-Boards for Violins, Guitars, Mandolins, Banjos, and Kindred Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Myinvention relates to improved means for teaching learners on musical instruments more particularly violins, guitars, mandolins, banjos and kindred instrumentsand to this end it consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a plan view of the finger board of a violin embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof showing the strings intact throughout the length of the tinger board.
In carrying out my invention, I provide, of celluloid or other diaphanous material, a thin strip or veneer A, the length of the finger board B, securing it to the latter, preferably by the use of glue. Upon the under side of the celluloid or diaphanous veneer A, that side placed next to the fingerboard are impressed or stamped or marked, preferably in gold or it may be in other color, the letters or characters according to the notes of the scale also the flats and sharps and semitones, these latter also flats and sharps being indicated by dots, the dots of the last being white or colored together with the letters are arranged in transverse lines or rows, at the required intervals or spaces apart. The diaphanous nature of the strip or veneer A permits the viewing therethrough of the letters or dots or characters by the player for his aid or guidance in striking the required strings of the instrument, and dispenses With the use of the fret bars.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim The combination, with the finger-board of a violin, of the strip of veneer of celluloid or diaphanous material, itself, having the musical characters, visible therethrough, and applied to said finger-board, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIAM II. ZORGER.
Witnesses:
JOSEPH I. BENILY, GEO. W. ZORGER.
