' Feb-9,1971 J. w. LITTLE CQIWERTIBLE HEAD COVERING Filed Jan. 13, 1969 INVENTOIQ 1272 W Lil i/e 3,561,010 CONVERTIBLE HEAD COVERING John W. Little, Hinsdale, Ill., assignor to Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, 111., a corporation of New York Filed Jan. 13, 1969, Ser. No. 790,631 Int. Cl. A42b 1/04 US. Cl. 2173 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hood type head covering having a face opening and a panel spaced rearwardly of the opening and stitched to the inner surface of the head covering. The head covering may be worn with the panel adjacent the rear portion of the hood, leaving the face of the wearer exposed, or the panel may be spaced from the rear portion to close the face opening and to cover the face of the wearer. The panel has one or more openings to expose limited areas of the wearers face.
GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE INVENTION The present invention is related to a hood type head covering which includes a panel attached to the interior of the head covering. The panel is formed of a conforming fabric and has one or more discrete openings to expose limited areas of the wearers face. The head covering may be worn as a hood adapted to cover the ears and neck of the wearer and, in such use, the panel is arranged to lie contiguous to the back of the head of the wearer, or the panel may be moved forwardly covering the face of the wearer leaving exposed only the eyes or eyes and mouth of the wearer.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a head covering in accordance with my invention showing the face mask in outof-use position;
FIG. 2 is a similar view but showning the face mask in in-use position and exposing only the wearers eyes.
FIG. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the head covering when the same is worn as illustrated in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 but showing the head covering with the face mask in in-use position, as i1- lustrated in FIG. 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Referring to the drawings, the numeral indicates, generally, a hood-type head covering in accordance with my invention. Said covering may be permanently or detachably secured to a body garment 11, although it will be understood that the head covering may be worn in the nature of a helmet separate and apart from a garment. The hood 10 is formed of a plurality of sections 12, 13 and 14 conventionally cut and stitched so as to form a shell of suitable contour for receiving and enclosing the head of a wearer, in the manner illustrated in FIG. 1. The magrinal edge 16 of the hood 10 defining the face opening is hemmed for the reception of a draw string 17 to permit the edge to be gathered to hug the face of the wearer. The sections 12, 13 and 14 are preferably lined Patent Office Patented Feb. 9, 1971 with a knitted or pile fabric 18 or any other suitable material providing a liner co-extensive with the interior of the hood.
A panel 19 formed of suitable conforming material, such as a knitted fabric, is secured to the shell and liner 18 as by a line of stitching 20 which is disposed intermediate the free edge 16 and the rearward portion of the shell. Accordingly, the panel 19 may be arranged in facing abutting relation to the rearward portion of the liner, in the manner illustrated in FIG. 3, so that the headcovering may be worn, as illustrated in FIG. 1, or the panel 19 may be projected outwardly, in the manner illustrated in FIG. 4, to function as a face mask to be worn in the manner illustrated in FIG. 2, The panel 19 is provided with one or more discrete openings 21 located to register with the eyes or eyes and nose of the wearer so that only limited areas of the wearers face are exposed.
When the head covering is worn in either manner, as above described, the draw string '17 may be pulled to gather the free edge to form a restricted opening in snug engagement with the face of the wearer to afford greater comfort and warmth to the wearer.
It will be understood that when the panel 19 is worn in the manner illustrated in FIG. 3 it forms a supplemental lining for the head covering.
Various changes coming within the spirit of my invention may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art; hence, I do not wish to be limited to the speciific embodiment shown and described or uses mentioned, but intend the same to be merely exemplary, the scope of my invention being limited only by the appended claim.
I claim:
1. A convertible head covering comprising a hood having a front marginal edge folded back upon itself forming a tube and a full face opening, a drawstring received in said tube and having end portions extending outwardly thereof at the neck line of said hood for selectively gathering the marginal edge of the face opening to hug the face of the wearer, a conforming fabric panel, a continuous line of stitching joining said panel to the inner surfaces of the opposite sides and top of the hood intermediate the face opening and the rear of the hood, said panel having at least one opening formed threin to expose only a limited area of the wearers face, said panel being selectively disposable in abutting facing relationship with the side and rear portions of said hood to present the full face opening or spaced therefrom to substantially close the full face opening to cover the face of the wearer when the wearers head is disposed between the panel and the side and rear portions of the hood and a liner substantially coextensive with the interior surface of said hood.
