UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETHAN ROGERS, or GOHOES, NEW YORK.
ICE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,723, dated March 31, -1885.
Application filed December 27, 1884.
' after shown and describechwhereby quick and effective work can be done by alight pick, and the out ice afterward be readily broken by the tool, and'other advantages are obtained.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side view of an ice pick embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an outer edge view of the same.
The pick is composedin part of a flator approximately flat narrow blade, A,whichis serrated at its one end, being formed with duplicate or any number ofV-shaped teeth, I). sharpened from both or reverse sides of the blade. This blade is cut or divided from its opposite end for a considerable portion of its length, and the one of said divided port-ions extended backward in the general direction of the blade to form a rear extension, 0, on which is secured a weight, B, while the other divided portion is bent to form a shank, d, at right angles, or thereabout, to the main portion of the blade and in the same plane with it. On this latter divided portion or shank d is fitted a Wooden or other handle, 0, which thus occupies a one-sided position intermediate of the (No model.)
length of the blade-that is, between its serrated or cutting end and the Weight B.
An ice-pick constructed as described will not only do the Work effectually and quickly, even though the tool be a light one, the serrated end .of the pick readily cutting or dividing the ice, and the weight at the opposite end of the blade, or what may be termed the head of the pick, assisting the cutting action, but by simply turning the tool in the hand the head of the pick or weight thereon may be afterward used for crushing or breaking the cut ice into small or fine particles, thus making the tool, which has a hammer-like action, exceedingly handy and convenient.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. The blade of the pick, having serrated or cutting points at its one end, a Weighted head at its opposite end, and an angularly-arranged intermediate shank for the handle of the pick, essentially as described.
2. The blade A, serrated at its one end, as described, and cut or divided to form a back or head extension, 0, and intermediate angularly'arranged shank, d, in combination with the head-weight B and handle O,'the whole being arranged in relation with each other, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ETHAN ROGERS.
