2 Claims. (Cl. 2-14) This invention relates to goggle assemblies such as for use in industry for welding, burning, chipping and the like.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved goggle assembly having a pair of lens boxes wherein the lens boxes are secured together in a friction-tight manner to provide for pivotal, forward and rearward and sidewise adjustment of the lens boxes with respect to each other closely to lit the wearer, wherein the desired adjustment of the lens boxes may be readily and simply accomplished without the use of tools, wherein the lens boxes remain in adjusted positions during use, wherein the space between the lens boxes is effectively bridged or closed to deter the entrance of foreign matter, and wherein the lens boxes are firmly held in place on the face of the wearer and yet readily and conveniently raised and lowered from the face of the wearer.
Briefly, the goggle assembly includes a pair of lens boxes, each having a frontal lens receiving portion, a marginal rearwardly extending flange portion and a hole in the top surface of the flange portion. A rigid lens box connecting strip has a longitudinally extending slot adjacent each end thereof for overlying the holes in the flange portions of the lens boxes. Means, including friction Washers and rivets extending through the holes in the flange portions of the lens boxes and the slots in the connecting strip, pivotally and slidably secure the connecting strip to the upper faces of the rearwardly extending flange portions to secure together the lens boxes and to provide for pivotal, forward and rearward and sidewise adjustment of the lens boxes with respect to each other closely to fit the face of the wearer.
The frontal lens receiving portions of the lens boxes are preferably provided with adjacent slots for receiving a flexible strap extending therethrough which forms a nose piece for bridging and closing the space between the lens boxes. Various means may be utilized for mounting the goggle assembly on the head of the wearer. For example, a pair of extensible supports may be secured at one end to the outer side faces of the rearwardly extending flange portions of the pair of lens boxes. The other ends of these extensible supports may be pivotally secured to a head engaging member, such as a head band, a safety hat or the like, to support the pair of lens boxes on the face of the wearer and to provide for readily raising the same therefrom. The adjustable lens boxes may also, if desired, be supported on the face of the wearer by a suitable resilient head band or the like.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 7 one form of the goggle assembly is generally designated at 10. It includes a pair of lens boxes 11 which may be formed of any suitable material such as by molding a suitable plastic material. Each lens box 11 includes a frontal lens receiving portion 12 having an annular screw threaded projection 13. A lens 14 overlies the end of the projection 13 and is held in place thereon by a screw threaded ring 15 which is screwed onto the projection 13. Each lens box is also provided with a marginal rearwardly extending flange portion 17 which is adapted to engage the face of the wearer. The upper surface of each rearwardly extending flange portion 17 is provided with a hole 18.
A rigid connecting strip 19 .is utilized for connecting together the lens boxes 11. This rigid connecting strip may be made of any suitable material such as metal. It is provided adjacent its ends with holes preferably in the form of longitudinally extending slots 20. These slots 2t! in the connecting strip 19 overlie the holes 18 in the upper surfaces of the rearwardly extending flanges 17 of the lens boxes 11. The connecting strip 19 is adjustably secured to the lens boxes 11 by rivets 24 extending through the holes 18 and the slots 20. A washer 22 is interposed between the lens box 11 and the connecting strip 19 and outer washers 21 and 23 are also utilized. These outer washers 21 and 23 and particularly the washer 23 is resilient in character so that when the rivets 24 are peened the spring washers operate frictionally and resiliently to connect the connecting strip 19 to the lens boxes 11.
Because of this resilient and frictional connection between the connecting strip 19 and the lens boxes 11 the lens boxes are normally retained in adjusted position with respect to each other and with respect to the connecting strip 19. Because of the pivotal connection between the lens boxes and the connecting strip the lens boxes 11 may be pivotally adjusted with respect to each other and they also may be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly with respect to each other, as illustrated in Figs.
2 and 3. The longitudinally arranged slots 20 in the connecting strip 19 also provide for sidewise adjustment of the lens boxes 11 with respect to each other so that they may be located closer together or farther apart as desired. In this Way the lens boxes 11 may be substantially completely adjusted to any desired position so that the goggle assembly will completely fit the face of the wearer. These adjustments may be made readily and simply without the use of tools and after the adjustments are made the lens boxes 11 remain in the desired adjusted positions, they being frictionally held in such positions.
As shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 5 the frontal lens receiving portion 12 of each lens box is provided with a slot 26, these slots being on the inner side adjacent each other. A flexible strap 27 made of leather,
rubber or any other desired material extends through the slots 26 and may be secured in place by an adjustable buckle 28. The upper edge of the strap 27 is preferably provided with an extension 29 as illustrated in Fig. 6. This strap 27 with its extension 29 effectively bridges and closes the space between the lens boxes 11 to keep out foreign material.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7 the lens boxes are secured or mounted on the face of the wearer by a pair of extensible supports. Here the outer sides of the rearwardly extending flange portion 17 are provided with brackets 30 to which are secured rods 31 by rivets 32. The rods 31 extend into sleeves 33. Springs 34 are also located in the sleeves 33 and extend between the ends of the sleeves 33 and an abutment 35 on the rods 31. Thus, the springs 34 tend to collapse the rods 31 with respect to the sleeves 33 but yet permit extension thereof against the action of the springs 34 to thereby provide extensible supports. The sleeves 33 carry brackets 36 which in turn are connected by ball and socket joints 37 to brackets 38 carried by a headband 39. The head band 39 is completely adjustable and the overlapping ends thereof are received in a sleeve 40. After adjustment the ends of the head band 39 are clamped in adjusted position by a clamping nut 41.
In the use of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 8 to the head band 39 is properly adjusted and is placed on the head of the wearer. The lens boxes 11 are brought into position on the face of the wearer and are adjusted with respect to each other to proper positions so that the lens boxes will completely contact the face of the wearer. When in proper adjusted position the lens boxes 11 and the bridging strap 27 afford substantially complete protection to the eyes of the wearer. The lens boxes may be readily lifted from the face of the wearer by pulling the same forwardly as illustrated in Fig. 9 and raising them to position illustrated in Fig. 10. in this way the goggle assembly may be manipulated on and off the face as desired with only one hand and during these manipulations the adjustment of the lens boxes is not altered. Preferably the lens boxes 11 are made sufficiently large so as to accommodate conventional prescription spectacles.
The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12 differs from the form of invention heretofore described in the manner of mounting the lens boxes 11 on the face of the wearer. Here the outer sides of the rearwardly extending portions of the lens boxes are provided with holes 43 for receiving a flexible and resilient head band 44, such as disclosed in Liautaud Patent No. 2,545,428 granted March 13, 1951. The head band 44 may be made out of rubber or any other suitable material. It is provided adjacent its ends with a plurality of projections 45 so that the head band 44 may be adjustably secured to the lens boxes 11. This adjustment may be accomplished by stretching the head band 44 for pulling the projections 45 through the holes 43. When the head band 44'is so properly adjusted the lens boxes 11 are 4 readily supported on the face of the wearer. Here as in the other form of the invention the lens boxes 11 may be adjusted with respect to each other in order completely to fit the face of the wearer, and may be readily manipulated on and off the face of the wearer with one hand without altering the adjustments.
While for purposes of illustration two forms of this invention have been disclosed other forms thereof may become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to this disclosure, and therefore this invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. Goggles having a pair of separate lens boxes, each having a frontal lens receiving portion and a marginal rearwardly extending flange portion for engaging the face of the wearer, a rigid lens box connecting strip having longitudinally extending slots adjacent the ends thereof, means including friction means extending through the slots of the connecting strip for pivotally and slidably securing the connecting strip to the upper faces only of the'rearwardly extending flange portions of the lens boxes to secure together the lens boxes and to provide for pivotal, forward and rearward and sidewise adjustment of the lens boxes with respect to each other closely to fit the face of the wearer, the frontal lens receiving portions of the lens boxes having adjacent slots, and a flexible strap extending through the adjacent slots in the frontal portions of the lens boxes to form a nose piece for bridging the space between the lens boxes.
2. Goggles comprising a pair of separate lens boxes, each having a frontal lens receiving portion, a marginal rearwardly extending flange portion and a hole in the top surface of the flange portion, a rigid lens box connecting strip having a longitudinally extending slot adjacent each end thereof for overlying the holes in the flange portions of the lens boxes, means including friction washers and rivets extending through the holes in the flange portions of the lens boxes and the slots in the connecting strip for pivotally and slidably securing the connecting strip to the upper faces of the rearwardly extending flange portions of the lens boxes to secure together the lens boxes and to provide for pivotal, forward and rearward and sidewise adjustment of the lens boxes with respect to each other closely to fit the face of the wearer, the frontal lens receiving portions of the lens boxes having adjacent slots, and a flexible strap extending through the adjacent slots in the frontal portions of the lens boxes to form a nose piece for bridging the space between the lens boxes.
