4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in film holders employed in X-ray photographing steel castings, and more particularly film holders for use in connection with castings in the form of tubular casings.
One object of the invention is to provide a film holder comprising inner and outer, tubular shells between which the film is held, and front and rear removable caps closing the front and rear ends of the shells, wherein the front and rear caps are clamped together by readily removable retaining means, thereby greatly facilitating loading of the film holder.
Other objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view of my improved film holder. Figure 2 is a front elevational view of Figure 1, looking from left to right in said figure. Figure 3 is a transverse, vertical sectional view, corresponding substantially to the line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a side elevational View of the locking head end of one of the retaining elements of my improved film holder.
As shown in the drawing, my improved film holder comprises broadly an inner tubular shell A; an outer tubular shell B; a front cap C; a rear cap D; and a pair of retaining elements EE.
The shells A and B are of the same design, each being in the form of an elongated, cylindrical, tubular member. The inner shell fits within the outer shell with sufiicient space therebetween to accommodate a single thickness of sensitized photographic film I I]. The shells A and B are preferably made of fiber or any other similar material.
The caps C and D are of the same design. Each cap is in the form of a relatively thick ring or collar having an inwardly directed, outer, annular flange II, a slightly inclined inner, annular wall I2, and a connecting transverse section I3, joining the flange I I and the wall I2. The flange I I and the wall I2 define an outwardly flaring slot I4 which forms an annular seat adapted to receive the corresponding ends of the shells A and B. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the wall I2 projects inwardly beyond the fiange II and is provided at its inner end with a laterally inwardly projecting, annular wall portion I5, which terminates in an annular flange I6, which extends outwardly and defines the circular opening of the ring. Each ringlike cap C and D is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite slots I|II which open inwardly of the ring and extend through the flange I6 and the wall I5 thereof. The slots I'I-I I and Il-I I of the two rings are adapted to accommodate the rod or shank portions of the retaining elements EE.
The retaining elements E-E serve to clamp the parts together, connecting the ringlike caps C and D. Each element E comprises an elongated shank portion in the form of a rod of cylindrical, transverse cross section, headed at its rear end, as indicated by I8. The head I8 is similar to a round bolt head and is adapted to shoulder on the wall I5 of the rear cap D at opposite sides of the corresponding slot I'I thereof. At the forward end, the shank of each element E is provided with a locking lug I9, which is in the form of a fiat, L-shaped, platel'ke section projecting laterally from opposite sides of the rod or shank, thereby presenting rearwardly facing abutment shoulders 2ll-20. The shoulders 2fl2ll are adapted to bear on the wall I5 of the front cap C at opposite sides of the corresponding slot I'I thereof.
In loading the film holder, the sensitized photographic film is placed inside the shell B. The shell A is then placed within the sensitized film and the outer shell B and the front and rear heads are applied, the flanges IIII being engaged over the correspondin ends of the outer shell B and the inner walls I2-I2 forced into the opening of the inner shell A at the front and rear ends thereof. The locking members E#E are next applied by passing the rodlike shank portions thereof in lateral direction into the slots II-I| and I'iI'l of the front and rear caps C and D with the locking lugs extending edgewise so as to pass freely through the slot portions in the flange I 5 of the front cap. Each locking element is then pulled forwardly to engage the head I8 thereof against the wall l5 of the cap D. Each rod is then rotated through an angle of approximately degrees by means of the lug I9 thereof to bring the locking shoulders 2B20 into overhanging locking relation with the wall I5 at opposite sides of the slot I1. The retaining elements when thus locked clamp the caps C and D together, tightly wedging the opposite ends of the shells A and B into the flaring seats i l-I4 of the caps.
I claim:
1. In a film holder, the combination with inner and outer tubular shells between which the film is adapted to be held: of front and rear caps closing the ends of said tubular shells; and a retaining element for clamping said caps together, comprising an elongated member having a head at one end and a locking lug at the other end, said head and lug having shouldered engagement with said caps respectively.
2. I a film holder, the combination with inner and outer tubular shells between which the film is adapted to be held; of front and rear locking rings having seats within which the corresponding ends of said inner and outer shells are engaged; and a pair of locking elements connecting said caps and clamping the same together, each of said locking elements having a head at one end in shouldered engagement with one of said caps and a locking lug at the other end in shouldered engagement with the other cap.
3. In a film holder, the combination with inner and outer tubular shells between which the film is adapted to be held; of front and rear locking rings having seats within which the corresponding ends of said inner and outer shells are engaged; radial slots in each of said rings communicating with the openings of said rings, the slots of said front and rear caps being in longitudinal alignment; and a pair of elongated looking elements connecting said caps and clamping the same together, each element comprising an elongated shank portion accommodated in the corresponding slots of said caps, a head at the rear end of said shank in shouldered engagement with the rear caps, and a flat platelike locking lug at the other end of said shank extending beyond opposite sides of the same and shouldered against the front cap at opposite sides of the corresponding slot.

In a film holder, the combination with inner and outer tubular'shells between which the film is adapted to be held; of front and rear locking rings having seats within which the corresponding ends of said inner and outer shells are engaged; radial slots in each of said rings communicating with the openings of said rings, the slots of said front and rear caps being in longitudinal alignment; and a pair of elongated lock- ERIC G.
