James W. Welsh, Providence, E. assigner to Welsh Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application February 15, 193e, serial No. 'mais 1 claim. (ci. anni) This invention relates to a goggle; and hasior one of its objects to provide a goggle which may befworn for diving or swimming under water to exclude the water from the eyes that the eyes may be opened under water without the discomfort sometimes attendant upon the water entering the eyes. l y
Another object of the invention is to provide a goggle which may be-used in certain occupations where smoke or gases are circulating that may cause dlscomfortto the eyes.
A further object of the invention is to provid in such a goggle astructure which will seal the eyes against the entrance of gases or water even though there be irregularities of the face about the eyes. Another object of the inventionis to provide a simple structure with transparent portions which are rmly heldin position and yet which may be readily removed and replaced should they bcome scratched or damaged.
With these and other objects in view, the in' vention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
, Fig. 1 is a face view of the front portion of the Fig. 2 is a rear view of the front body portion of the goggle;
Fig. 31s a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view substantially at right angles to the section of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the clasping part or the goggle for securing 'the head encircling strap.
In some occupations where smoke or gases occur or in swimming under water or diving, it is often desirable to have some shield for the eyes to prevent the discomforts of gases or salt water entering the eyes and yet permit the user of the goggles to see; 'and in order that this may be accomplished, I have provided a goggle with ribs or molded formations which will engage the face about the eyes to tightly seal the chambers which contain the transparencies for the eyes from the entry of gases or water, thus eectively accommodating the goggle to the contour of the face about the eyes for effecting this seal; and the followingis a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustratingthe preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.I
With reference to the drawing, I0 designates the body portion of the goggles preferably formed of some moldable elastic material such as rubber ior Duprene, with reduced Aends il to which ends there is suitably attached, a strap i2 for encircling the head and holding the body portion iii tightly against the face. 5
. Chambers I 4 are provided at the location oi each of the eyesby molding the material so as to provide outwardly extending walls i5 with in wardly extending nanges i6 having recesses il thereinior the reception of windows i8 which. g@ may be formed of some transparent materiai such as glass or Celluloid but are preferably formed of Celluloid. The outer edge i5 of the ange is suiiiciently ilexible and resilient so that the Windows I8 may be positioned by reason of the elasticity of the flange, but when in place will so expand the ilangeas to form a tight connection that there may beno entry of water or gases through the connection to enter the chambers above mentioned.
There is also molded on the body portion i@ a series of ribs 20; 2i and 22. These ribs are generally concentrically arranged but the rib 2i merges into the rib 22, while there is an additional rib 23 merging into the rib 22. These ribs are of dierent thicknesses and contours so as to nt the usual formation of the iace about the eyes; and by reason of their resiliency and the 1 elasticity of the rubber forming the bodyy and ribs will conform somewhat to"the"shape oi the gg face and rmly press against all parts of the face circularly aboutI the eyes so as to tightly seal the eyes yagainst the entrance of gases or water. The bridge portion 25 connecting the two chambers also has a rib 2t extending along it to join 'the ribs 22 but by reason of the concentric ribs 22 encircling the eyes it is non-essential that there be a rib 2t to prevent water passing between the bridge 25 and the face. This rib 2t, however, may serve to break the iorce oi anyA water which might tend to circulate therethrough.
In order to attach the strip i 2 to the reduced ends il o1 the body the stud portion 28 of a snap fastener is mounted in each end portion l i while at each end of the strap a buckle 2Q carrying a mating socket portion 3l) oi the snap fastener is adjustably mounted on the end 3i of the strap i2 for detachable engagement with the studs of the snap fastener 28 as desired. In this manner the elastic strap il may be adjusted for the encircling of heads of different sizes.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the 'construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which gg the device is susceptible, the invention being,de=1
ned and limited only by the terms of the ap` surface, a plurality of spaced resilient ribs extending rearwardly from the inner surface of said body .and completely about each eye cup, the outer of said ribs about each cup being of a.
greater depth or thickness thanthe inner rib and greater than any other portion along its extent at the location of the hollow of the face under the eye to extend into such hollow or recess of the face.
