' pair of goggles that may be economically produced and wherein themetal frames carrying the transparent eyepieces are protected by rims of rubber or other suitable elastic material which may be readily applied to the frames and which are secured thereto without the use of stitching or special fastening means. The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined'by claim at the conclusion hereof. t

Referring to the drawings, the goggles 1nclude a pair of eyepieces carrying frames 4, eyepieces 5 of glass or other suitable transparent material and rims 16 of rubber or other suitable cushioning material.

Each of the frames 4 are preferably formed from sheet metal to provide a frame portion 6 against which the eyepiece 5 may rest a bridge support or bridge portlon 7 and a side flange portion; 8 extending around the frame portion 6 from one side of the hinge support to the other to provide eye-openings but not extending over the hinge support or bridge portion 7 ofthe goggles; said flange portion tapering as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings so asto conform to the general shape of the face around the eyes of the wearer.

The eyepieces 5 fit into the frames described above and are held in position therein in any suitable manner as by punching out 5 tongues 12 from the side portions 8 and bending them down against the eyepieces to clamp said eyepieces between said tongues vand the frame portions 6.

A hinge 13 has its hinge plate respectively 3 secured to the bridge portion 7 of each frame by rivets l4.

Each rim 16 is as noted above of rubber or other suitable elastic cushioning material and may be initially formed as a ring having s a relatively heavy body portion 15 whose outer side is rounded or taperedtoimprove the appearance of the finished product and having an inwardly extending thinner flange portion 17 adjacent an annular recess 18, said Q7 flange extending beyond said recess. This ring or band may be readily applied to the frame previously described by drawing it over the flanged portion thereof so that the edge flange 9 seats in the recess 18 and the inner side of the body portion 15 abuts the flange portion 8 while the flange 17 extends over the edge flange 9 and beyond the same, this ring being put Lmder tension during this operation so that it is tightly held on the go eyeframe, it being noted that the undercut or inclined edges 11 under these conditions prevent the cushioning member from slipping'oif its frame.

It is also to be noted that the rims extend across the open spaces between the side flanges at the bridge piece of the goggles and thus protects that portion of the wearers face between the eyes.

Any suitable means maybe used for holding the goggles in position on the face of wearer as for example the adjustable elastic cord or tape 19 secured to the frames by passing its ends through spaced openings 20 in: the side flanges 8.

I desire it to be understood that this invention, is notto be limitedto any particular form or arrangement of parts except insofar as such'limitations are included in the claimfl 10o What I claim as my invention is:

In a pair of goggles, the combination of a pair of eyepiece carrying frames, each having an integral bridge portion and side portions terminating adjacent said bridge portion with undercut inclined end edges and with flanged outer edges, said edges inclining inwardly from said flanged edges toward theeye frame, a rim of elastic material for each frame recessed to receive said flanged edges and having a body portion engaging the side portion and end edges of,

the frame on which it is mounted and held in tensioned engagement therewith.
