Application filed April 16, 1930.; Serial No. 444,816.
My invention has for one of its objects to provide a display sign having a fabric on which is shown a design which may be produced on a fabric by the batik process or other. means and which may be illuminated by light rays through the fabric from the rear of the fabric.
Another object of the invention is to provide a translucent member with a figure thereon and toprovide a relatively opaque member at the rear of the translucent memher and showing an outline of the said figure, there being means for throwing light rays from the rear of the translucent member which will serve to throw the outline of the figure on the rear member as a shadow to obscure the figure on the translucent member.
Another object of the invention is to pro-.
. vide an automatic switch for the lamp which is used to throw the light rays so that the observer will see the figure on the front memher and the shadow thrown by the rear member alternately.
Another object of the invention is to position a figure on the rear member to throw a shadow on the front translucent member and relatively to a figure or design on the said translucent member.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a frame on which the front and rear members may be disposed and which may be freed from the reflector associated therewith making it possible to fold the reflector to permit the packing of the reflector and the frame in a small space for shipment.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is described.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, of which Flgure 1 1s a View showing in elevatlon r my display sign and with the figure on the 3 rear member disposed for throwing a shadow display sign, but with the upper reflector removed,
Fig. 4 is a side sectional elevation of Fig. 3, and V I Fig. 5 is a View illustrating the manner in 65 which the rear reflector may be removed from the frame and be folded to be shipped with the frame.
'By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a frame 10 is provided, this frame having a front guideway 11 and a rear guideway 12, the frame having in its rear grooves 13 in which are normally disposed the side edges 14 of the members 15 forming the rear reflector 16. These members 15 are held together by 'ineans of a fabric 17 which serves asa hinge so thatwhenthe members 15 are withdrawn fronithe grooves 13 of the frame 10 they maybe folded, asindicated inFig. I 5 of the drawings. I I v 1 r 7 Inthe front guideway 11 there is normally disposed a frame-18 for supporting the edges of'a translucent member 19. This translucent member 19 is usually a fabric and'is preferably a silk fabric. On this silk fabric there is produced bythe batik system, or by painting, or other means, a design which may be in colors so that when light rays pass from the rear through the fabric 19 the design will beilluminated giving a pleasing effect. L v f In the rear guideway 12 there is normally disposed a frame 20 for supporting a rear member 21on which is indicated a design, the saidv designon therear member 21 being opaque. It will, therefore, be seen that when the light rays do not pass from the rear forwardly the opaque design on the rear member 29 will not beseen through the fabric 19, but
that when the light rays do pass from the rear forwardly theopaque design on the rear member 21 will be thrown as a shadow on the fabric 19.
It will beunderstood that various designs may be indicated on the fabric 19 and various opaquefigures may be indicated on the rear member 21 and the design on the fabric 19 and the-figureorfigu-res onthe rear member Qlmay be arranged to produce many different effects. One possible arrangement will we be to indicate on the fabric 19 a woman having a foundation garment, and on the rear member 21 a design to throw a shadow on the fabric 19 which will have the effect of indicating by the shadow an outer garment on the woman indicated on the fabric 19. However, as has been stated, various arrangements of the figure on the fabric 19 and the shadow which is to be thrown thereon may be made to produce different situations and effects. The frames 18 and 20 may be readily removed from the main frame 10 so that the designs on the fabric 19 and the rear member 21 may be changed from time to time. v
Secured to the rear of the main frame 10 there is a lamp socket 22 which preferably has means for permitting the current to pass to the lamp 23 intermittently, this being in accordance with any well known construction. This lamp 23 is secured in the socket 22 in the usual manner and the upper reflector 24 secured at the rear of the main frame 10 serves to throw the light from the lamp 23 against the reflector members 15, the said reflector members 15 serving to throw the light against the rear member 21 by which means a shadow will be thrown by the opaque design thereon against the fabric 19.
There are preferably cut-out portions 25 in the upper portion of the main frame 10 so that the frames 18 and 20 may be readily withdrawn from the main frame 10.
What is claimed is:
1. A display sign having a front translucent member on which is indicated a design, a rear member having a design whichmay be thrown as a shadow on the front member, forming with the design on the front member a new design, a reflector at the rear of the front member and spaced therefrom, a lamp disposed adjacent an edge of the front of the translucent member, and a second reflector for throwing the light rays on the first mentioned reflector.
2. A display sign having an open frame with two adjacent guideways, a front translucent member disposed in one of the guideways, a rear memberwith an opaque design for throwing a shadow on the first mentioned member to form with the design there on a new design, the rear member being disposed in the other guideway, a reflector secured to the open frame at the rear of the rear member, and means for throwing light rays on the reflector.
3. A display sign having a front member consisting of a textile fabric on which is indicated a design, a rear member having a design which may be thrown as a shadow on the design on the front member to modify the first mentioned design, and lighting means for throwing the said shadow.
4. A display sign having an open frame with vertically extending guideways, there being grooves in the sides of the rear of the frame, a reflector having parts hinged together vertically and with side edges normal- 1y disposed in the grooves, a lamp secured to the rear of the top of the frame, and screens disposed in the vertical guideways.
5. A display sign having a front member consisting of a textile fabric on which a design is indicated in colors, a rear member having a design which may be thrown as a shadow on the design on the front member to modify the first mentioned design, and lighting means for throwing the said shadow.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 14th day of April, 1930.
