purine MACHINE.
t Application filed. December 31, 1923. Serial No. 683,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIE DEMATOS, a citizen of Greece, residing at Sydney, Australia, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Drying Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drying machines and has for an object the provision of a machine of the centrifugal type which also utilizes steam, so that the contents of the machine may be thoroughly and quickly dried.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a drying machine which will not require careful stacking or placing of the clothes or other articles therein, to prevent irregular operation and knocking, the machine being simple and economical in construction and capable of drying a large quantity of articles in a relatively short time.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construc tion, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drying machine constructed in accordance with the invention, the direction of the steam passing through the steam coil being indicated by arrows.
Figure 2 is an end view of the machine with the door closed.
Figure 3 is a. view looking at the opposite end of the machine.
Figure 4- is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section.
Figure 6 is a. fragmentary longitudinal section on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the machine as shown comprises a stationary frame or casing which is substantially cylindrical and which includes heads 10 and 11, mounted upon legs or standards 12. The heads are connected by pipes or conduits 13 and the latter are connected at their opposite ends by means of elbows 1a in such a manner as to provide a continuous coil whose inlet is indicated at 15 and whose outlet is indicated at 16. Steam may thus be passed through the coil from a suitable source of supply so that the pipes 13 will act as a heat radiator.
Rotatably mounted within the frame of the machine is a cylindrical container 17 which is closed at one end andopen at its opposite end. This container is formed with a foraminous cylindrical wall so as to permit of the passage of air therethrough, while the pipes or conduits 13 are spaced apart for the same purpose. Extending from the closed end of the container 17 is a shaft 18 and mounted upon this shaft are pulleys 19 to provide a belt connection with a suitable source of power.
The head 11 of the frame is open so as to permit of access to the open end of the container 17 and this head is provided with a door 20 which is hinged at 21 and provided with a latch 22. The container 17 is provided with spaced agitator elements 23 so that when the said container is revolved, the articles therein will be moved to provide for quick drying, as will be readily understood.
Tt will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, that articles placed within the container 17 will be thoroughly and quickly dried when the said container is revolved within the frame which includes the pipes or conduits 13, the steam or other source of heat pass ing through these pipes and throwing off heat which circulates through the container 17 as the latter is revolved. This heat, together with the air provided by the centrifugal action of the container will thorougly dry and air articles within the container.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A drying machine embodying a sub stantially cylindrical frame including spaced heads and a steam coil connecting said heads, a cylinder mounted for rotation with in the frame, means whereby the cylinder may be rotated and a door at one end of the frame, whereby access may be obtained to the interior of the rotatable cylinder.
2. A drying machine embodying a substantially cylindrical frame including spaced heads and a steam coil connecting said heads, a foraminous cylindrical container open at one end and mounted for rotation Within the frame, means whereby the con tainer may be rotated and a door at one end of the frame, whereby access may be obtained to the interior of the container.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
ARCHIE DEMATOS.
