Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. GARTON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE-LUBRICATING JOURNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,036, dated August 11, 1874 application filed July 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES P. GARTON, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Axle Journals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements on the car-axle journal for which Letters Patent No. 150,561 were granted to me May 5, 1874, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse section. I section through line as m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the rings.
A represents the journal-box; B, the journal, and G O the perforated loose rings thereon,
' constructed in the same manner as described G G, slightly concave wings D D, the ends of which are turned up in the center and curved downward toward both. sides, also forming grooves a a between the ends of the wings, as 7 shown.
The wings D D may be all formed in one piece, as a collar to be slipped on the journal; or they may be made in two or more sections Fig. 2 is a longitudinal so as to thoroughly lubricate all the bearings- I i that is, both the interior and exterior circumference of the loose rings 0 O. In additionthereto the wings D D act as blowers to clean the perforations. in the rings 0 G from any dirt that may lodge therein. The turned-up ends of the wings D D work in a circumferential recess or groove, 01, made around the interior of the journal-box A. I also place washers b on each side of the loose rings G, to prevent from wearing or winding as it revolves.
With these improvements all the bearings will be kept constantly and thoroughly lubricated, and the journal will run smooth and easy.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The concave wings D D, attached to the journal A between the loose rings 0 0, all combined substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the journal A, loose rings 0 O, and the washers b b, placed on each side of said rings, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. GAltTON.
Witnesses G. H. WATSON, ELIPHALET S. SCRIPTURE.
