GEORGE H. DAY, or so 'rnB IneE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY, or soUriiBmDeE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY assocIArIo v OF MASSACHUSETTS.
EYE-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lIay 18, 192() Application 'iuea' January 25, 1917. Serial No. 144,404.
To all'whom it may concern; Be it known thatl, GEORGE H. DAY, a citizen of the United States residing at Southbridge, in the county of .VVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Eye-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in eye protectors, and has particular reference to an improved construction of'light weight eye protector particularly adapted for motoring orsimilaruse. 7
One ofthe leading objects of the present invention isjthe provision of an improved construction of rim' or lens frame member which shall satisfactorily retain the lens in position, which shall be comfortable in its'fit against the face of the wearer, and which shall be provided with means facilitating the ready attachment of a lateral shield when desired.
Qther objects and advantages of my improved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will. be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
Figure I represents a plan view of a complete protector constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Fig. 11 represents a horizontal sectional view through one of the lens frames.
Fig. HI represents a plan view of the blanlt from which my improvedconstruction is formed.
Fig. IV represents a plan view showing a folding screen member attached to my improved rim. v
Fig. V represents a vertical sectlonal new of my construction with the parts in folded relation.
In the drawings, in which similar characters of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 denotes the bridging member, serving to connect my improved rim, which retains in position the usual eye protecting lenses 2.
. My improved rim, as is most clearly illustrated in Fig. III, comprises a single strip of material beveled at the end atthe points 8, and having the additional pair of cuts or notches 4 formed therein at points substantiallyhalf way between the center and end of the rim. The rim in this form is then rolled to form at one edge the" V-shaped groove 5 adapted to receive and secure in position the beveled edge of the lens 2'. r
At the opposite edge my improved rim rigidly-attached folding screen m mb illustrated in Fig. IV. M 1 At the connecting ends of my'im r d rim 1 provide the usual end pieces12, in which are pivoted the temples 13 extending rearwardly as through the slot let formed in the flexible protector 10.
By reference particularly to Fig. V the purpose or function of the beveled portions,
crush inward into the V-shaped notch thus permits of ready folding of the shield mem ber into closed position as desired, and in which the non-shield-bearing portion is so shaped as to provide a soft and comfortable face engaging portion.
I claim:
1. A blank for an eye protector rim comprising a single strip of material having notches formed in one edge at points inter-- mediate the center and ends of the strip and having the opposite edge bent into V-shape in cross section to provide a lens receiving groove, the central-portion of the ungrooved edge intermediate the notches being rolled .to provide a face receiving bead and the terminal portions being adapted to be connected and project beyond the beadin a flange.
2. In, an eye protector, the combination with a lens, of a retaining rim therefor, having a groove to receive the lens, and a rearwardly extending portion, said portion having a plurality of indentations formed in the rear face thereof, the edge of the protector between certain of the indentations being rolled to form a face engaging seat, and between certain of the other indentations being extended to form a screen receiving flange, an end piece carried by the rim and disposed adjacent one of the indentations in therear edge thereof, and a temple carried by the end piece and adapted to fold into the indentation in the flange, substantially as illustrated.
3. A blank for. an eye protector rim comprising a single strip of material having notches formed in one edge at points intertially as and forthe purpose described.
4. An eye protector rim ,comprising a single strin -of material [having notches formed in one edge at points intermediate the center and ends of the strip and having the opposite edge bent into ,V shape in cross section to p'rovide'a lens receiving'groove, the central portion of the ungrooved edge intermediate the notches being rolled to provide a face receiving bead and the terminal portions being adapted to be connected and project beyond the bead in a flange, said flange having ventilation apertures formed therethrough and hollow openended rivets engaged in the apertures, and a shield member pierced and secured in position on the flange by the hollow rivets whereby the rivets afli'ord both shield attaching means and ventilation patches.
In testimony whereof I afflx my signature in the'presence of two witnesses. GEORGE H. DAY.
