Description

Electron Optical Imaging Apparatus The invention relates to on an electron optical imaging device that uses a spherical, electron emitting photocathode and one acting as an anode, compared to the photocathode smaller or larger electron capture screen, both in a tubular flask, with the photocathode on the collecting screen is mapped with the help of an electric field, whose equipotential surfaces in the space between the photocathode and the anode essentially like parts of spherical surfaces concentric to the photocathode are formed.

Devices of this type find z. B. Use as an image converter or Image intensifier or as a preamplifier in television tubes. In such In addition to the sharpness of the image in the axis of the tube, there is also the extension the usable field of view of interest, d. H. the dimensions of that part of the photocathode surface, which is mapped with reasonable accuracy on the capture screen.

From the Dutch patent 7_5 366 it is known that in an image converter with a concave spherical photocathode and an anode, which also is spherical and is spaced from the photocathode at an axially variable distance is located, the usable field of view then reaches its maximum value when photocathode and anode are concentric. This observation shows an analogy with one in light optics well-known fact that namely with concentric optical systems, so those in which the light-refracting and / or reflective surfaces are spherical and have a common center of curvature, the field of view in none Way is limited by the aberrations.

By calculation it can easily be proven that with an electron-optical Tube of the type in question does not have a sharp image with positive magnification, d. H. no upright image can be formed when one is purely concentric electrostatic field, in other words, focusing the electrons is only possible on a screen that is in a place behind the common The center of curvature of the equipotential surfaces is arranged, and the obtained Picture is reversed. With the image converter according to the Dutch patent specification 75 366 the electrons are focused in such a way that the anode is practical has the shape of a small spherical cap, the photocathode of which is opposite spherical Front wall is provided with a narrow opening, which the accelerated electrons towards the luminescent screen, the latter at a relatively large distance is arranged behind the opening in the field-free interior of the spherical cap. Naturally the required opening in the anode disturbs the concentric one in a very radical way Design of the equipotential surfaces in the important area near the anode and gives rise to additional aberrations in the oblique rays, which the Limit field of view.

The main object of the present invention is to solve the above-mentioned disadvantage thereby avoiding that the electron beams are focused without doing the Destroying the concentricity of the field in an undesirable manner. Another goal The invention is to provide an electron optical device of shorter duration Overall length than with the previously known comparable types or such Device whose photocathode is less curved for the same length than with the previously known devices of this type.

According to the invention, the photocathode and the anode are on the same Side of the center of curvature of the photocathode arranged, and it is a means to generate a magnetic field, the lines of force in the space between the photocathode and the anode are substantially perpendicular to the Equipotential surfaces of the electric field run.

With the marked device it succeeds if you have the strength of the magnetic field gives the correct value, as a result of the additional focusing Effect of the concentric magnetic field the electron beams in the plane of the electron collecting screen located in front of the center of curvature of the photocathode to focus. The electrostatic field can therefore be in the whole area in which it has a marked influence on the electron beams, purely concentrically his without being in one point, namely in the center of curvature of the field unlimited high field strength is required.

It can be seen from this that an electron optical tube according to the invention can be made much shorter than the previous ones to be compared with it Tubes with only an electrostatic focusing field, due to the fact. that the collecting screen is at a considerable distance from the center of curvature of the photocathode instead of being arranged behind it. Moreover, it is for the same reason possible in a number of cases. the curvature,; r, -, diits of the photocathode im Can be enlarged considerably compared to the previous electrostatic tubes, thereby eliminating the problem of designing an optical system with suitable curvature of field for use in front of the tube is very facilitated.

A known disadvantage of magnetic electron lenses is that. that the image formed by them is usually at a certain angle opposite the object is rotated, whereby this angle depends on the field strength. Consequently In systems of magnetic electron optics, the fields must be strictly constant be kept when optical complications with a changeable image rotation connected should be avoided. In the device according to the invention can however, the magnetic focusing field will not cause image rotation due to the The fact that the main rays, as which correspond to the various pixels central rays of the electron bundle or the orbits of the electrons which the Leaving photocathode at zero lateral velocity, labeled should be. follow the lines of force of the magnetic field and therefore through the the latter are not affected. As a result, the superposition of the magnetic Field does not require any special optical precautions or tight stabilization the electrical power source.

To excite the electric and magnetic fields in the inventive Device can be used different means, namely for the magnetic Field primarily solenoids in the shape of a body of revolution, whose ampere turns are longitudinal the axis of the tube are distributed so that the lines of force of the magnetic field ride the lines of force of the concentric electric field coincide. Optional Suitable permanent magnets can also be used. A permanent agnet arrangement for this purpose can consist of a number of ring-shaped magnets which together assembled into a package with an equal number of rings made of pure iron are, which the tube receives coaxially. The axial distance and the inside diameter the rings can be adjusted so that you get the desired shape of the lines of force of the magnetic field.

An advantageous practical embodiment of the subject matter of the invention. which takes up little space, is characterized by the fact that the tube is at electron-optical imaging devices known per se, essentially frustoconical Has shape whose base areas are essentially determined by the size of the photocathode and the anode are determined that the electric field in electron-optical Imaging devices are also known per se by a number of arranged one behind the other in the direction of the tube axis and centered on the tube axis, suitably charged ring electrodes formed of substantially conical shape will. the diameter of which decrease with the diameter of the tube, and that the means for generating the magnetic field in electron-optical devices as well in a manner known per se to form a solenoid, the outer diameter of which is longitudinal the tube axis is essentially constant. but its inside diameter is the same decreases with the decrease in the diameter of the tube.

It should be noted that the fields in the invention Device do not have to be exactly concentric and that the lines of force of both Fields do not need to coincide exactly in order to reduce the aberrations in a large one Reduce the field of view to a minimum. Deviations from the exact conditions are allowed, especially in the part of the field near the catcher screen, as the Electrons in this area already have a high speed and the Cross-section of the bundles of rays corresponding to the various image points are proportionate is small. Therefore, the focusing of the electrons on the image pickup screen not in such a pronounced degree by deviations from concentricity influenced in the area of the anode, as was the case with the previous tubes, in which. the collecting screen at a relatively large distance behind the anode lies. In particular, the anode does not need to be concentric with the photocathode but can be executed, for example, or you can give her the Give the shape of a cup with the edge facing the photocathode.

The drawing shows an image converter as an example of the invention Contraption.

The vacuum tube 1 has a substantially frustoconical shape. Your front wall 2 is spherical and with a thin electrically conductive layer 3, which is transparent to radiation incident from the left, and connected by a line 4 to the negative terminal of a voltage divider 5 is. On the layer 3, a photocathode 6 is applied, which depending on the Type of radiation involved in various ways. as is known in the art is, can be produced.

The inner surface of the flat rear wall 7 of the tube is provided with a fluorescent layer S on which a thin, preferably opaque layer 9 of an electrically conductive material is deposited. This layer 9 is conductively connected to the most positive terminal of the voltage divider 5 and forms the anode of the tube.

The tube also contains a number of frustoconical rings 10, 11 and 12 which are centered on the axis of the tube and, when connected to the intermediate terminals of the voltage divider, have three potentials which increase towards the anode. The anode is conductively connected to a frustoconical ring electrode 13. The number, shape and potentials of the electrodes are such that the lines of force 14 of the electrostatic field in the space between the photocathode and the collecting screen are rectilinear to a good approximation and converge towards the center of curvature of the spherical photocathode 6 . The equipotential surfaces of the electrostatic field are then of course concentric with the photocathode.

In a device which would only be designed in accordance with the foregoing, the electrons emitted from a point on the photocathode could not be focused on the collecting screen 9, which is on the same side of the center of curvature of the photocathode as the photocathode itself. According to the present invention This allows focusing on the screen 9 while maintaining the concentration of the electrostatic field, so that a magnetostatic field is superimposed on the latter, the lines of force 15 in the space between the photocathode and the collecting screen coincide in good approximation with the lines of force 14 of the electric field. For this purpose, an annular field coil 16 with a conical axial opening is pushed over the tube. The ampere turns of this field coil are distributed over its length in such a way that the condition explained above is fulfilled. The field coil can be connected to a source of constant direct current through terminals not shown in the drawing. Of course, the required magnetic field can also be obtained by solenoids of other shapes, depending on the changing conditions of the practical embodiment. In any case, the person skilled in the art will readily be able to determine the dimensions and other details of the required field coil by calculation or by experiment. The embodiment of the imaging device shown in the drawing is particularly advantageous because of its very compact design.

It should be noted that it is already known in electron optics In such a way, tubes an electrostatic and a magnetostatic field to each other to superimpose that the lines of force of the magnetic field with the main electron beams coincide. Likewise, it has already been proposed in an image converter with a Magnification of 1: 1 uniform electrostatic and electromagnetic fields, whose lines of force coincide everywhere, to be combined with one another. The given Invention idea, namely the superimposition of concentric electrical and magnetic Fields to maintain a larger field of view, however, have not yet been set. The application of the invention described is not shown in the drawing Imager limited. For devices with a covex photocathode, of which an enlarged image on a concave or flat screen is to be formed, one can of course get the same benefits. It is essential for the invention that the imaging ratio is not equal to 1 and that the photocathode and the anode are on the same side of the center of curvature are located.
