A number of people have reportedly been killed after shots were fired at a shopping centre in Munich - amid reports police are hunting more than one gunman.

A Muslim newspaper in Germany Islamische Zeitung has tweeted that mosques in Munich will be open overnight to offer refuge for people who have nowhere to stay.

Police have urged people not to travel outdoors, remain inside and avoid public places, as the situation is still a live incident.

Eyewitness Luan Zequiri said he was at the scene when the shooting broke out.

The shooter yelled an anti-foreigner slur and "there was a really loud scream", he told German broadcaster N-tv.

"I looked in his direction and he shot two people on the stairs."

Heartbreaking scenes are emerging as news of those who have lost their lives or been seriously injured is spreading among relatives.

New York Times correspondent Rukmini Callimachi has recounted sad scenes she has seen with one family. They fear their son may have died or been gravely injured, and are protecting their father from finding out as he has a heart condition and they fear he may be too unwell to hear the news.

 

 

 

Eight victims are believed to have died and a number of other injured.

A ninth person who has died is believed to be a gunman, who may have died by suicide. 

Police say the number of injured "runs into double figures" but is still unclear at this stage.
