Should the Chargers sign RB David Cobb?

The Tennessee Titans today announced that they had waived second-year running back David Cobb as they trimmed their roster to 75 players. After they signed DeMarco Murray in free agency and drafted Derrick Henry in the second round, Cobb was pretty clearly on the bubble to make the team. It seems the Titans did him a favor by waiving him during the first round of cuts as that gives him a better chance to latch on with another team.

As of Sunday morning, the Chargers could be in the market for an RB3 thanks to Branden Oliver’s Achilles injury. While they still have rookie Kenneth Farrow and recently claimed Gus Johnson off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons, the Chargers are by no means set at the running back position.

What they especially lack is a quality short yardage back and depth in pass blocking backs. It just so happens that this describes a portion of David Cobb’s skill set. Cobb was also drafted by the Titans while current Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was their head coach. So, Cobb is an unusually clean fit for the Chargers given those circumstances.

Will the Chargers sign Cobb? That’s impossible to say right now, but he is definitely worth their consideration.
