Doug Baldwin impressed by rookie Chris Carson: 'He just has all the tools'

When the Seattle Seahawks selected running back Chris Carson in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, many didn’t know what to make of the selection.

But during Day 6 of the team’s training camp, wide receiver Doug Baldwin told reporters he gets exactly why the Seahawks selected Carson, who he called one of the most polished rookies he’s ever been around.

“He just has all the tools. I think he is probably, to me, is probably the most polished of any rookie at that position that I have ever seen. He has all the tools in his tool bag. He just has to put it all together. He is mature. He has the right mindset. He has the work ethic, but when you see something like that, you don’t want him to miss the opportunity. So we stay on him because we know the potential that he has, but again potential means nothing if you don’t put in emotion.”

Carson, who was selected with the No. 249 pick out of Oklahoma State, has impressed in several practices this week.

On Thursday, the running back performed well in a blitz-pickup drill, where running backs square up with linebackers. Rookies usually struggle with blitz-pickup drills, but it came with ease for Carson.

Carson, who was reportedly one of head coach Pete Carroll’s favorite picks in the draft, received high marks from the coach after Thursday’s practice.

“He looked pretty good,” Carroll said. “Yesterday he had an excellent day. Last practice he had an excellent finish to the practice. The last four carries – he was ripping. He had a couple big runs today again. Really excited about this guy. Really have high hopes for him. We’ll see how he does. It’s really just getting started.

Carroll continued: “He’s a very physical runner, which is the style that we like. You can’t tell that here because we’re not finishing the runs with the tackling. But I know it’s in his background and I keep chirping at him, we wanna see it when the time comes. Might have a real competitive guy at that spot.”

If Carson continues to impress, he’ll likely battle running back Alex Collins for a spot on the roster this season.
