‘That’s not a Bakewell Tart!’

Great British Bake Off viewers outraged over Bakewell Tart recipe during Pastry Week

There was some confusion over what the recipe should be

GREAT British Bake Off viewers have been left baffled after the bakers were tasked with making Bakewell Tarts – with icing rather than almonds on top.

Those watching the show questioned the recipe they were given and took to Twitter to debate what should go into the tasty tarts.

One person remarked: “You don't put a layer of fondant on a Bakewell Tart, you tarts #GBBO.”

While someone else questioned: “#Bakewell, traditional Bakewell = no icing, should have almonds surely?”

“Am I the only person that doesn't put icing on my Bakewell tart? I've always used flaked almonds #GBBO #bakeoff @PaulHollywood,” asked another.

And a further person blasted: “That's not a Bakewell Tart. It's a Cherry Bakewell.”

Viewers were also rather amused as they watched Val crumble under pressure –despite boasting that she makes Bakewell Tarts EVERY week.

She later lost her place on the show.

There was further amusement when aerospace engineer Andrew Smyth forgot to turn on the oven to cook his Bakewell tart in the Technical Bake.

Just 20 minutes before presenting his tart to judges Mary and Paul the very polite Andrew shouts: “It’s not cooking! That’s unfortunate.

“It means it’s been in there for 15 minutes doing nothing.”

A bakewell tart traditionally consists of a shortcrust pastry shell beneath layers of jam, frangipane, and a topping of flaked almonds.

A Cherry Bakewell is a version of the tart where the frangipane is covered with a top layer of almond-flavoured fondant and a single half glacé cherry - this appears to be more similar to what the bakers were making.
