Flames list Mike Smith as day-to-day, goalie Jon Gillies recalled from AHL

The Calgary Flames may need to look for some goaltending help.

The Flames have announced that the goaltender Mike Smith is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, and as a result, the team has recalled goaltender Jon Gillies from their AHL affiliate the Stockton Heat.

The Flames also assigned forward Ryan Lomberg to Stockton.

Smith left Wednesday’s contest against the Philadelphia Flyers with an undisclosed injury. The veteran netminder has struggled this season, posting a 2.99 goals against average and .888 save percentage, to go along with an 11-7-1 record. But Gilles’ season in the AHL hasn’t gone much better.

The 24-year-old has played in 18 games with Stockton this season posting a miserable 3.96 GAA and a .861 SV%. Last season, he played in 11 games for Calgary with a 2.88 GAA and a .896 SV%.

With Smith sidelined, look for the Flames to lean heavily on 26-year-old David Rittich, who has appeared in 16 games this season, posting a 2.31 GAA and .921 SV%.

Lomberg, meanwhile, recently finished serving his two-game suspension for instigating a fight in the last five minutes of a game versus the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 7. He hadn’t registered a point with the Flames in three games.
