The first domino to fall on deadline day came in after the Oilers game. The team announced that they had acquired defenseman Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange for forward Kyle Brodziak and a conditional pick in 2020 or 2021*.
Pierre Lebrun reported after the announcement that Green had waived his no-trade clause to come to the Oilers. Also, that the Red Wings have retained 50% of Green’s cap hit for the remainder of the year, as he is a UFA this upcoming summer.
Mike Green has 11 points in 48 games so far this season, a far cry from the numbers he put up earlier in his career with Washington. You should note, however, that Green has been playing on the basement-dwelling Red Wings and could see a slight resurgence playing alongside the likes of McDavid and Draisaitl.
It’s unclear where the Oilers plan to put Green in the lineup after this trade. Also, what corresponding roster moves will have to be made to accommodate for Green’s arrival? Regardless, this move will surely shore up the Oilers back end as they make a push for their first playoff berth since 2017.
This trade is very welcomed news for the time being, as Oscar Klefbom and Kris Russell are expected to be out past the deadline. It should also be able to help down the stretch, adding a veteran presence with playoff experience.
This trade may not be the blockbuster that fans hope for on deadline day, but from the Oilers perspective, this is a big win. Holland has added a half-salary veteran defenseman with offensive skill. All he paid was a conditional pick and Kyle Brodziak, who has retired due to injury. It’s safe to say that this trade is a very low risk move that could have a good pay-off for the Oilers. It’s a good move.
