It was only fitting that an absolutely bananas game between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens on Thursday ended with a page of the NHL record book being re-written.

After Jesperi Kotkaniemi knotted it up at fours with his second of the night late in the third, the puck made its way to Max Domi’s twig in the neutral zone. He busted down the left wing and converted a tasty toe-drag into the game-winner for Montreal with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation:

Then, directly off the ensuing faceoff, Joel Armia turned a Phillip Danault face-off win into a record-setting tally as he deposited the loose puck into Washington’s empty net just two seconds after Domi tallied the winner.

It was a straight-up slugfest in Montreal on Thursday, with four different lead changes, 10 goals scored and both clubs combining for 75 shots. On top of that, Jesperi Kotkaniemi finally netted his first (two) NHL goals and Domi continued his unreal play with the dramatic go-ahead marker in the game’s final minute — on his father Tie’s birthday, no less.

Oh, and empty net or not, scoring two goals within literally two seconds of each is pretty absurd, too.
