Right now, Canada is #blessed with two things: Today, October 13, the country is enjoying its Thanksgiving, or rather “L’Action de grâce," and secondly, its citizens can also lay claim to inspiring (at least the naming of) the much beloved, oft-imitated denim-on-denim look, "the Canadian Tuxedo.” (And yes, while we realize this may not be termed as such due to where it originated, we would choose to take it as a compliment if we were you, Canada.)
Let’s take a look back at the history of head-to-toe denim: Before it hit this season’s runways of Bottega Veneta, Chloé, and Gucci, Millennial memories of the Canadian Tuxedo have fondly hinged on **Justin Timberlake'**s and Britney Spears's coordinating denim eveningwear at the 2001 MTV awards. But it was back in the fifties that Elvis donned cuffed jeans and an indigo button up, joined by figures no less prominent than Marilyn Monroe and Bing Crosby, who both gave the American classic a Western flair with cowboy accessories. Denim on denim was similarly prominent in the music scene—there was Blondie's Debbie Harry, who added a rock ’n’ roll edge to the look in a denim jacket (sans shirt) and a pair of high-waisted faded jeans; the dixie darling Dolly Parton who wore her hems and sleeves flared; and Sade, who accented her blue uniform with gold hoops and cuffs.
And so, without further ado, in honor of Canadian Thanksgiving, here are 14 icons who sported the denim-on-denim uniform throughout the ages —because being patriotic can be chic too.
