When Melissa Benoist flies to the CW for Supergirl’s second season, she’ll have at least one very exciting new co-star: erstwhile TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, who will be playing the president of the United States. This prompts a philosophical question: is going from superhero to leader of the free world a promotion or more of a lateral move? Or even a demotion?

Deadline reports that long-running rumors about Carter joining the show have finally been confirmed.

Supergirl debuted on CBS, but the network handed the show off to the CW for its second season after it reportedly failed to draw enough viewers to make high license fees to Warner Bros. worthwhile. Airing on the CW, which is a child company of CBS and Time Warner (as in, Warner Bros.), would eliminate the license fee issue, but could perhaps create challenges of its own—for example, having to make Canada, where all of the network’s current superhero shows film, look like Los Angeles.

The good news is that if the show needs a hero, it already has a couple more lined up. There’s Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent/Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and will be back to reprise his role as Supergirl's adoptive father, as well as the returning Helen Slater—who plays Supergirl’s adoptive mother Eliza Danvers in the show, but played Kara herself in 1984’s Supergirl movie.
