Bathytoshia lata is endemic to the warm waters around Hawaii and the large stingray can often be found partially buried in the sand or mud.
Divers and swimmers should be very careful in the presence of stingrays, as the sting can cause serious or even fatal injuries.
Steve Irwin, known from the TV series "Crocodile Hunter", was fatally wounded by a stingray in the Great Barrier Reef.

Stingrays swim shallowly across the seabed in search of food and generate electrical fields that enable them to detect the heartbeat of even the smallest fish hidden in the sand or the muscle reactions of crustaceans.

Like sharks, rays are cartilaginous fish and are hunted and eaten by large sharks or heavy whales.
