People of all ages have questions and concerns about AI, and today, I had a great conversation regarding AI's impact on how we communicate with participants in the Lifelong Learning Institute, a program for people 55 and older through the NIU Continuing and Professional Education office. There is a myth that people who are older do not care or know about technology, but that is a gross oversimplification of how different generations engage with AI. We had an excellent dialog about their experiences with evolving communication technology over the decades, the benefits and challenges of AI, including chatGPT, for their needs and for society, and the connection between Lily Tomlin's "Ernestine" and today's virtual assistants.

  • Title slide with a cartoon-like picture of Lily Tomlin on a phone in front of a switchboard. The title of the presentation is "Is this the party to whom I am speaking": How automation and artificial intelligence are changing how we communicate. It is by Andrea L. Guzman.
