Simon Cowell has split from his fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy, according to one of his closest friends.

Zeta Graff, who has been friends with Cowell since they met in 2004, seemed to confirm the break-up, saying that Hussainy was "too needy" for the X Factor boss.

"Mezhgan was lovely but it was all too much for Simon," Graff told The Mirror. "As soon as he hears the words 'stability' and 'future', I think it all became a bit too much. "She was too needy, but he did try. Simon needs a woman who isn't defined by him, who has her own career or wealth. Someone who doesn't depend on him. But he and Mezhgan are still friends." Cowell announced that he was engaged to Hussainy back in February 2012, but their relationship status has been the subject of media scrutiny since they ditched their marriage plans in September 2011.

Cowell admitted that the relationship had become "complicated" recently, in a cryptic series of statements. "We have had a break from each other, and we are still incredibly close. I don't really know where I am at the moment," he said. "I'm vulnerable. It's not on, it's not off, it's somewhere in the middle. I don't know if I will ever get married, but I am happy."
