Food & Wine's Editorial Guidelines Published on February 11, 2024 Photo: Food & Wine / Madison Woiten One of my favorite rituals is making pour-over coffee. And yet, between grinding and the coffee beans, weighing the grounds, boiling the water in the electric kettle — not to mention patiently pouring the water over the grounds and waiting for the coffee to brew — the whole process takes time. Sometimes I just need coffee now. But after months of using store bought cold brew, I recently had the opportunity to try the new Miir stainless steel pour over carafe (after the brand was generous enough to send it to me). After my first use, I was reminded why I fell in love with making full-bodied, flavorful pour-over coffee in the first place. I’ve been using it for seven months now, and I might never go back to store bought cold brew again. Miir Standard Carafe Amazon Buy on Amazon $80 The Miir standard carafe holds 33-ounces of coffee. It comes with a lid that you press into the opening of the carafe to trap heat, and it's compatible with any type of filter. And while most carafes are transparent glass, this one is made from stainless steel. I have tried top-rated options from brands like Cosori and Chemex, which is our editors’ pick for the best pour over coffee maker, so at first I was skeptical of the opaque stainless steel material, because it just felt counterintuitive to not be able to see the coffee as it drips into the carafe. But not only does it produce a very rich, very strong cup of black coffee without a hint of bitterness, but when it comes to keeping coffee hotter longer, stainless steel wins out easily (the lid helps too). One day I made a full carafe of pour over and it stayed hot the entire 8 hour work day. Another day, I made pour-over, drank half, and left the rest out overnight as an experiment. The next morning, it wasn’t piping hot anymore, but it was still warm enough to enjoy. I like to drink my coffee at a more leisurely pace, sipping each cup slowly before going back for more, rather than slugging it all at once. The glass carafes that I’ve tried leak heat quickly — in probably an hour I’ve got lukewarm coffee on my hands. I don’t have a quick way of reheating coffee in my kitchen, so its ability to maintain the temperature of hot coffee is the feature that I appreciate the most. Another benefit of stainless steel is that it’s shatterproof. No matter how well a glass carafe might work, if it's dropped it will break instantly. The Miir carafe could fall off the counter and drop right onto my hardwood floors and not even sustain a dent — trust me, I’ve tried. It’s crucial to point out that you do need a kitchen scale to use this carafe effectively. Because you can’t eyeball or estimate how much water you’re pouring inside, the amount of water needs to be measured precisely. The same goes for the amount of coffee grounds, but if you’re already using precise measurements to make pour-over, this won’t be a problem for you. It’s just extra important when using the Miir — you won’t know when it's full by sight, which leaves very little room for error. It also means that you can’t tell how much coffee is left in the carafe very easily. Luckily, it comes with a very handy user’s manual which actually specifies by weight how much water and coffee grounds you need to fill the carafe with coffee — without this manual I probably would have been lost trying to use it, or had to experiment extensively before getting the measurements right on my own. After using it for seven months, I can say with confidence that the Miir standard carafe is well worth trying out, especially if you’re passionate about coffee. It keeps coffee hot longer than other pour-coffee makers than I’ve tried — and it’s so much more durable than other models out there right now.
