Danish ceramist Axel Salto (1889–1961) is known for stoneware characterized by earthen colors and botanical forms. Salto had a varied career, working for Royal Copenhagen in the 1930s and later as a graphic designer for books, jewelry, and textiles. This vase was designed by Salto in 1949 and made in 1951—the same year he won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale. The underside of the piece is incised with the artist’s mark and glazed with the Royal Copenhagen manufacturer’s mark.
