Shark sightings: A hammerhead school and a beached mako

People have gotten a couple of close-up viewings of shark activity recently on Panama City Beach.

First, a school of hammerhead sharks swarmed beneath the County Pier earlier this week and had their picture taken by Tina Rudisill, according to WMBB-TV:

Hammerheads are not an unusual sight in the area and have very rarely attacked humans.

A less common sight happened Friday morning when a large mako shark washed ashore. PCB local Kip Clayton told WJHG-TV that he and some others saw the mako, still alive, and tried to push him back into the water but that he re-beached himself. He shared these photos with WJHG-TV:

The incidents do not indicate anything out of the ordinary, but they do offer a little excitement for the tourists (and even the locals) and serve as a reminder that there is a whole lot more going on below the surface than most people realize.
