This is a form of Whitework embroidery (Schwalmer Weisstickerei) that developed in the Schwalm region of central Germany. It started as a form of surface embroidery in the late 17th century, but during the following centuries the enclosed areas were opened up by withdrawing threads and then decorating them with pulled thread stitches. Its designs traditionally have simple motifs of Tulips, Hearts, Birds and Circles and are stitchedwith white threads on a white linen fabric. You will have the choice of stitching it with the traditional white threads and linen or with Ecru threads on a Raw linen.

Some experience of counted thread techniques - such as Cross Stitch - is not essential but would be useful for this class.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
