Historically, a steam train ran from Gatineau to Wakefield in the summer months along the Ottawa River. (The last trip was in 2011). The village relies on tourism and there’s a lot to pack into one day. What to do in Wakefield, Quebec
Eco-Odyssée
Open in 2007, you’ll find this wonderful nature park that is open year round. In the summer, you can rent paddleboard, canoes or paddelboards to explore an outdoor labyrinth maze. In the winter, you can skate in the maze! If water isn’t your favourite, there are walking paths as well. It’s also a great place to bring your family.
Wakefield Covered Bridge
Originally built in 1915 to connect both sides across the Gatineau River, the original bridge burnt down in 1984. However, funds were raised to reconstruct it and it reopened in 1998 and it a beautiful bridge! You might see people walking, biking or horseback riding through the bridge. Bring your swimming trunks and go for a swim in the Gatineau River (and be mindful of the strong currents).
Parc de la Rivière and Fairbairn Heritage House
Just up the road from the covered bridge is the Fairbairn Heritage House and Parc de la Riviere. Only open to the public on weekends through the summer, this heritage house hosts exhibits, events and is an excellent location for a picnic. Wander through the woods, pickup some local goodies, and more.

River Walk Pathway
Walk along the beautiful River Walk pathway that fronts the Gatineau River and travels along the historic railway.
