Unit 6: Research: Gir

GIR_-_Dog_Suit_Art gir_dogsuit

Gir is a robot that wears a suit to disguise himself as a talking dog in the TV show Invader Zim. Without the suit, Gir has cold grey skin, with a head shaped like an upside-down thumb tac. He has a small antenna with a turquoise piece of machinery on its tip, and bulb-like eyes which are the same colour. He has no nose, and a mouth which is usually seen slightly hidden by his eyes. He has a zig-zag tongue, despite being a robot, and spheres for shoulders. There are joints on his writes, and his body – combined with his legs – are short than his head. His body has a small openable compartment in his chest, and cone-like legs. His suit makes him appear furry and green, with long black ears and short fingerless limbs. You can see stitches on his arms. His eyes are white and bulging, with a triangular nose set between them. A square-shape tongue hangs from his mouth, and a seam is seen running across the middle of his flat face. A large metal zip adorns his chest. He has a tiny tail, the same colour and shape of his ears.

The reason why Gir appealed to me is because there’s nothing truly horrific about him. He’s just a robot that dresses as a dog. His design is, like Spooky’s, very simple and very cute. And his background isn’t very scary, which is relieving – it would be a bit repetitive if I only researched designs linked to the horror genre.
