Jawbreaker Machine by Wayne Thiebaud for Style Imitating Art

Hello and welcome to a new round of Style Imitation Art. It’s my turn again!

Jawbreaker Machine by Wayne Thiebald, oil on canvas, 1963. On display at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art

So Before We Get Started-What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

Why Did I Pick This Work of Art?

Here is what I told Shelbee and Salazar in my email to them, “

Being almost at the end of my tenure, I wanted to present art that was somehow important to me and that would also have design capabilities. Also, I’ve been concentrating on the art from one of my lifetime’s “happy places”, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.

Wayne Tiebauld’s Jawbreaker Machine has greeted me for the fifty-odd years that I have been going to the Nelson. This painting was my first introduction to Thiebauld. It even inspired a kindergarten art project that I did for quite a few years. It’s happy, very colorful,  and very summery.

I know we all had white last week but there are a lot of other colors in this painting, plus circles. You could also stretch those two red lines into stripes. It’s a good excuse for us to add some color to our wardrobe

Join Us!

Next Monday Salazar, Shelbee, and I will publish our interpretations of this work. That Monday is also my birthday.

I hope this inspires you to create a look from your closet and that you will join us. Send me your picture of your SIA-inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by Wednesday, July 5th. I’ll share the submissions on my blog on Thursday, July 6th. Yes, I am putting these a day later because, here in the States, July 4th is a pretty big holiday and some of us will probably need that extra day. because of activities. I just feel better giving everyone an extra day this time.

Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.

If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are @terrigardner_meadowtree, @14shadesofgrey, and @shelbeeontheedge.

Hope to see you there!

    1. I certainly hope it will be fun for everyone. To answer your question, yes, this will be my last year. I told Salazar and Shelbee back in January that I was not going to continue after December. I will have hosted for three years at that point.
