I heard this place is going to close, so naturally I have to write my review bidding it adieu. I was wandering around meat packing with a friend that really wanted to go to this bougie roof bar across the street for a coworker's birthday a few months ago. Only problem that occurred was that said bougie bar didn't let people up until 10pm for whatever inane reason. Insert "Let's find a cheap dive bar in the area". However, that's pretty impossible within a 5 block radius of Washington Street.
Warning- Hogs & Heifers is not cheap in the slightest bit. It's the original Coyote Ugly of New York and they try to milk it for every penny. The one charming thing I found upon entering is that there was no line and there was no cover. I remember I had come years ago and the bouncer said "$10" and walked away tsking under my breathe. However, there still is a bouncer that checks you over and insists that men have to wear ties to get in. Chuckles.
It's a fun spectacle for ten minutes. You are paying for a show and you pretty much have to buy a drink. Can't just hang around or one of the feet stomping dancers and bartenders will glare you down. Special of the night was fireball and a pbr. For two people it was about $20. Long sigh. I can't believe I'm paying $10 for a pbr and that's on special. It's okay though because my friend got it. After he got cash from the atm and was charged $7 for using it. I've never come across an atm fee more expensive in my entire life. I had fun and was entertained. Bras hanging from the ceiling. Kind of incredibly dirty. But to be honest, the other Coyote Ugly that harbors the name on 1st avenue is better. Which is sad because I don't think I've been there since I was like 22. Needless to say, this place pinches every penny from you and I can't wait to see what they replace it with.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bob F.Fort Lee, NJ2692Apr 11, 2019
The women bartenders would call you a "BIG Fin PUSSY" if you did not do SHOTS with them.
Then pull out a megaphone and embarrass you even more before getting on top of the heel beaten up bar and do a Hoochie Coochie dance.
Woman would remove their bras in that magical Houdini way without removing their shirt or sweater and throw it up on the back bar with the hundreds of others.
Another CLASSIC dirty bar GONE!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1206109230048Jul 28, 2015
Man, it's been at least 5+ years since I've been here and the last time was definitely the most memorable because I was with my gal pals and it was Fleet Week.
Hogs & Heifers is a special place - a break if you will - from the trendy, pretentious monotony that illuminates the eyes (and wallets) of all those that flock to NYC's Meatpacking District in search of a good time. I particularly have never really been fond of this neighborhood - except for maybe 1 or 2 places...this bar not really being one of them.
They try to be Coyote Ugly (keyword: TRY) but it feels forced, ungenuine and overdone. Drink prices here are steep, much steeper than one would thing seeing their casual facade, dive bar interior, biker atmosphere and the ocean of bras that adorns much of their ceiling.
While Hogs & Heifers does have a certain charm about it, I think it's kind of become a hollow shell of what it once was. Almost tourist trappy and not quite the place they probably were in their prime.
I've heard they're closing...which is still sad in and of itself since it really is a small institution in Meatpacking (first opened in 1992), but I'm also not shedding any tears over it because as a native New Yorker, I'm A.) used to things closing and B.) They have a location in Vegas whenever anyone needs their H&H fix. RIP guys.
P.S. There is still Coyote Ugly downtown and Iron Horse downtown by the Seaport.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 12467841581Mar 16, 2014
Its a grungy hole in the wall dive bar which has quick service and thats all you need. There was no cover, the bouncers were pleasant, the bartender is in a bikini but so what thats part of their theme, and most of the patrons aren't those annoying clubbing types.
I don't know what people are expecting when they come here? Just because it is in the meatpacking district doesn't mean it has to be a 5 star super trendy place...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 1, 2015
Cash only!
They do have an ATM on premises.
The bartenders we had were awesome. They were very attentive and on top of every thing. Also, amazing dancers.
The whole staff was super amazing and nice.
You could see where Coyote Ugly got their inspiration from. The music is pure 80's and 90's rock. It's fun but definitely brings in an older crowd it seems.
They do ask girls to jump up and dance, which always seems like good fun.
Fun place for the experience, not sure I'd be rushing back though.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mikey K.Manhattan, NY26712154May 4, 2012
This bar is the shit. I had an insanely nice time last night.
Yes, the bar does reek somewhat towards the back, but what dive bar doesn't have a stench near the restrooms?
Also, be warned...don't just stand around. The ladies will grab the bullhorn and call you out. I actually got complimented (on the bullhorn) because some douche bags couldn't pay their bar tab and started to bolt. The bouncer guarded the door, but the chick said let him leave....and I'm like I'll take the two shots and his beer, and basically paid their tab. (I tried to get the bartender chick to do one of them, but she convinced me to do both.)
The walls and ceiling are full of stuff. Bras, bras, bras. There's random dancing on the bar just like in the movie Coyote Ugly. I tried to get my friend to give up her bra just because I think it would be funny, but apparently bras are $40 now, and she told me "heck no".
Oh, and FYI, cameras are prohibited. Don't even think about it!!!! Be real people, how would you feel if random strangers were taking photos of you? What would they do with them?
There's no credit card service either which is probably a good thing. The drinks are rather expensive, even just for a beer. I swear shots and beers ran me up so much. There is an ATM in the back, but best have your money in your account before ordering.....because if I'm back I don't think I can pay for another round for someone else. Unless you're hot, then that's another story.
Lots of nice looking people dancing to garage music and just having a good time.
I will definitely be back for some dance action and extremely rude service. Actually, I think the girls rather liked me since they were nice (to me). They'll be rude to you though. It's expected in this place, not because it's a dive, but because it's what makes the joint what it is. So lively.
Cheers, be back soon!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Apr 24, 2014
- this place is terrifying and quite possibly the worst bar i've ever been to
- half of the place was filled with 50+ year old men with greasy comb-overs and leisure suits
- $10 cover
- i swear there's literally an inch of dust on everything, allergies be damned, I wanted to swiffer everything and touch nothing
- the drinks were strong but expensive and small
- the bartender with the speakerphone was entirely trite and obnoxious, though I suppose that can be said about anyone with a speakerphone
- the bartender that served me, though aggressive, was personable and sweet, i really hope she ends up somewhere else, the sooner the better, best of luck to her
- everything about this place wreaks of desperation
- the music . . you'd expect would be country, it wasn't. . it was actually kind of all over the place
- just, noHelpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Mar 6, 2008
maybe this place is a tourist trap on the weekend, but when I went during the week it felt like we were not in NYC anymore. we were the only young people there (besides the awesomely slutty bartenders) and it was a lovely change of scene. I had the honor of dancing with a 70 year old man in a cowboy hat and tap shoes. And being the only female patron under 50 they made me dance on the bar- don't worry, I managed to keep my bra on. Plus there was live music that was actually decent.

I was completely unimpressed when we made a pit stop at this somewhat 'famous' bar.
During a New York bar hop with just my best friend and I, we hit up a bunch of bars stopping for just one drink per stop. Hogs and Heifers was the last of our stops before we stumbled into a cab and headed home.
When we got into the bar, we noticed that it was almost dead. We thought it would be going crazy around last call, but there were only about 10 other people in the bar. Overall, I loved the look of the bar from the inside. Bras, antlers, cowboy boots, and booze... Sounds like a lethal combination to a good time.
The bartenders were either really drunk or really annoying. Turning down the music every two minutes to yell at someone with a bullhorn. Effective and funny only the first couple of times, but after about 20 times in 30 minutes? Come on now. They were also being downright rude, when a guy was going to buy his group a couple of shots with a 100 dollar bill, and the bartender refused to give him change. She made it clear that he was to buy her and her friend shots as well and that the rest was their tip...
If they were to try that horse crap with me I would have been taken out of the bar with fists swinging.
The last and final letdown was when they got up at closing to dance on the bar... I grabbed my iPhone to snap a pic, when I was rudely told there was no photos allowed. Are you serious?? That has to be the only reason people frequent this bar, to see girls dance on the bar. I guess they didn't want their beer guts put on blast.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 26, 2015
Classic dive bar in a now completely upscale area. This shows how it used to be. The staff here is nice, and you get the show. The drinks unfortunately aren't matching the decor or what this place used to be. Not sure how long it will be around, but it's an institution.
This is coyote ugly BTW, not some imposter like you get in vegas or elsewhere :)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
