Friday, January 24, 2014 at 8 pm | KH “Faust and Melnikov make this music live and breathe ... thrillingly.” (The Times ) “The musical sleight of hand used by these expert players to focus the very different character of each sonata is in itself cause for wonder. Though quite different as musical personalities – Faust, subtle and quietly formal; Melnikov, a master of the meaningful pause – the combination of the two fires a laser between the staves. Fleetness and elegance are very much to the fore ... beauty of tone, Isabelle Faust too.” (Gramophone ) All Ludwig van Beethoven program: Violin Sonata No. 4 Violin Sonata No. 9, “Kreutzer” Violin Sonata No. 3 Violin Sonata No. 10, “The Cockcrow” Tickets start at $30

Often referred to as the “Israeli Springsteen,” multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and guitarist David Broza’s soulful voice and beautiful acoustic guitar work create magic in songs that range from blues to flamenco. Imagine Blind Willie Johnson collaborating with North African trance musicians, or Stevie Wonder incorporating Yemenite chants, to be able to envision the sound of Yemen Blues. Led by the charismatic Ravid Kahalani, Yemen Blues invokes the spiritual and musical heritage rooted in Yemenite tradition, but within a groove and funk that is familiar and infectious.

Nitin Sawhney has said that no one embodies the spirit of innovation and experimentation more evidently than Anoushka Shankar. In this performance, Shankar performs songs from her newest CD, produced by Sawhney. Harper’s Bazaar noted of Anoushka Shankar that “she’s making her own unique mark on the world” and “her exquisite sitar playing ... lives up to the virtuosity that made her the youngest woman ever nominated for a World Music Grammy.”

“One of flamenco’s great mavericks.” (The Guardian) “The flamenco dancer Israel Galván combines complete command of his medium with a phenomenally fertile range of off-beat stylistic ideas. He gives you – deliberately – the impression that traditional flamenco is too small to contain all he needs to do in terms of rhythm and drama ... It’s extremely rare in any genre to see a dancer of this singular imagination and authority.” (The New York Times ) “Brilliantly inventive avant-garde performer Israel Galván takes flamenco to a whole new level.” (Time Out London )

Ana Moura, with her luxuriant voice and captivating stage presence, is at the forefront of the fado music renaissance. “Even among the new breed of fado singers, which has dared to deviate from a rigid tradition, Ms. Moura is a distinctly worldly superstar.” “Duality creates a profound undertow in fado, the alluring and mournful folk music of Portugal, and Ana Moura, one of its brightest younger stars, knows to use it to her best advantage.” (The New York Times ) “Her mesmeric appeal radiates from within, even if you don’t know a syllable of Portuguese. Her ability to alternately whisper, growl and ring like a silver bell are the hallmarks of a fine singer.” (NPR Music )

Her well-crafted songs are often light and breezy, but her soulful voice brings a bluesy depth and potency that can stop you in your tracks.” (TIME ) Mali’s ngoni ace Bassekou Kouyate has been called “a genius” by Taj Mahal and his music was described as “ancient and utterly contemporary” by The Guardian. Manhattan Transfer has been around for 40 years, with over 20 albums to their credit.“Whatever they do, wherever they do it, it’s always with that signature sound: four-part harmony, tight and precise.” (CBS Sunday Morning ) “A marvelous blend of melody and song.” (AllAboutJazz )

Rennie Harris Puremovement Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 8 pm | KH “The Ambassador of Hip Hop” Rennie Harris has received numerous awards for what he refers to as “Hip-Hop concert dance.” A Guggenheim Fellow, Harris has been known to mix Shakespeare with hip hop, poetry, and rap music, into his dance performance. From the street and club dance scene in notorious North Philly, the raw, visceral energy of Puremovement’s dance is rooted in the rich AfricanAmerican traditions. “Even if you didn’t know toprock from downrock or a pop from a crump, you had to admire the sheer magnitude of what the human body is capable of doing, as demonstrated by ... this remarkably athletic and energetic company. But if you could look beyond your sheer amazement at the acrobatic – Can you really do three front flips in a row from a dead standstill? Did he seriously arch backwards in a headstand until his heels touched the ground behind him? – there was a vivid window into a world of gritty emotion.” (Herald-Tribune )

“Quite simply, the most dazzlingly, uncannily gifted pianist in the concert world today, and there’s nothing left to do but sit back, listen and marvel at her artistry.” (San Francisco Chronicle ) Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is widely recognized for playing that combines the spontaneity and fearless imagination of youth with the discipline and precision of a mature artist. “One of the most gifted pianists of her generation ... A passionate performer, Ms. Wang meshes an impeccable technique and insightful artistry.” (The New York Times ) In this concert, she explores new territory with works by Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Franz Liszt.

“Fingers of steel, exquisite sense of the music, melting lyricism without sentimentality – and the whole, which was greater than its parts.” (San Francisco Classical Voice ) Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili’s warm, sometimes sorrowful playing may reflect a close proximity to Georgian folk music, which, she attests, has greatly influenced her musicality. “Buniatishvili’s technical prowess enables her to combine energy with precision at a level comparable to Argerich. Her intellectual rigour also allows her to plot the mercurial changes of pace, weight and speed that are built into its structure. Her allegros are imbued with Faustian recklessness.” (Limelight )

András Schiff Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2 pm | KH “Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon.” (The New York Times ) András Schiff received the 2012 International Classical Music Award in the Solo Instrumental Recording of the Year category, the Order pour le mérite for Sciences and Arts, and was also made a Member of Honour of Vienna Konzerthaus. Mr. Schiff’s relationship with the music of J.S. Bach is well established; as The New York Times says,“there is nothing more reliable in the world of classical music today than András Schiff playing Bach.”

Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 3 pm | KH

Russian pianist Kirill Gerstein’s masterful technique, discerning intelligence, and musical curiosity have led him to explore repertoire spanning centuries and many different styles. The youngest student ever to attend the Berklee College of Music, his early training and experience in jazz has contributed an important element to his interpretive style, inspiring an energetic and expressive musical personality that distinguishes his playing. Mr. Gerstein has been the recipient of numerous prestigious prizes, including the Gilmore Artist Award and an Avery Fisher Grant in 2010.

“A virtuoso who begins where others leave off.” (Washington Post ) Named by The Economist as one of 20 living polymaths, Stephen Hough is a rare Renaissance man of our time. One of the world’s leading concert pianists, he has also excelled as a writer and composer and was the first classical performing artist to win a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. His performances encompass “exceptional emotional range, exquisite technique and a storyteller’s skill for making each movement an engrossing short story.” (Pioneer Press ) “You can’t help but come away from a Hough concert feeling refreshed by his vision, inspired by his insights and ready to start exploring all over again.” (Classical Music )
