When all colours fade…

Three drop-dead gorgeous pictures but they all have a certain warmth to them… Who dares to say that black&white is just plain black and white?

A man and his jeans

I like pictures of men wearing jeans. Somehow it’s the only pants-related fabric that is manly enough to accentuate, yet fashionably enough to impress. It’s the jeans that makes the man…

Or the boy in these cases:

Sometimes there is much more that meets the eye… and occasionally that also counts for photography… Let’s take a closer look at these gorgeous pictures.

Both pictures are lovely but somewhat under- and overexposed. Intentionally because the light and/or shadows make these pictures mysterious and appealing. Yet, they also tend to hide things from us.

Let’s mark the hot and cold areas on these pictures.

This is done by Aperture. But you can do it just as well with photoshop or most picture editing software. Since the hot areas in these pictures are, well the light sources. We are mainly going to work on the blue areas, aka the cold areas. By editing these pictures we can enhance all the nice details that are lurking in the shadows.

I don’t claim that these pictures are more balanced know than they have been before. But that wasn’t really the point of this post.

“I have an affection for a great city. I feel safe in the neigborhood of man, and enjoy the sweet security of the streets.”

Henry Wadsworth

The fickle mill of karma
grinds slowly but so complete.
Within the fruits of victory
lie the seeds of my defeat.
And I can’t avoid it-tho I’m
allowed to duck and swerve.
This is it: I still get hit
with the shit that I deserve.

The wheel of fortune

The composition of colour is, next to light, also extremely important when you want to create a certain picture. It makes or breaks the atmosphere. A good excercice is to take the three most present colours of your pictures and put them on the wheel.

First things first… The wheel doesn’t tell us anything about the quality of a certain picture but it does tell us wich colour dominates. In the first picture it’s clear that the photographer wanted to create a warm feeling, the picture has a certain domination towards the red. The third picture is probably the most balanced one it has a white subtone with green and orange/red. It opens the spectrum, but still respects the correct colour combinations. The middle one is my least favorite. The picture isn’t as captivating as the other two. Why? Because it combines two confronting colours making the model look a bit yellowish. The colours in this picture aren’t extreme and present enough to jump out.

Let’s add some colour…

Nothing spices up a picture more than some colour… euh, well… part from the men posing offcourse…

Don’t have much to say on this topic… So, let’s continue…

Aziz light!

When it comes down to photography “light” is without any doubt the first element of a photographer. Without light pictures can’t exist.

Natural light

Although natural light is without any doubt my favorite, it simply doesn’t work for every picture. Sometimes there is just not enough of it, it’s unpredictable and hard when your shooting sequences.

Natural + Artificial

The difference between these pictures and the first ones are pretty clear. When you look closely at the shadows you can even tell how many different light sources where used. Anyway, the effect works…

Artificial Light

With artificial light the sky is the limit. You can go anyway you want and most of all you have the time to create a perfect shot. Never the less, the magic of pure natural light is missing.

This last picture was taken by “Nadia Ouick” a remarcable artist with an impressive portfolio. You can bet on it she will get her own artist-post.

Alekandro is a 45 year old photographer from Mexico City. His pictures mostly reflect the delicacy of the male body, without shame or compassion. Straight forward with a gay twist.

Although most of his pictures are in b/w he digitally enhances them by layering certain colourfull parts.

To see more of his work you can visit his deviant-art gallery @ http://alekandro.deviantart.com/ and like most artists donations are more than welcome…
