This Ford Mustang II got away, but there are more like it here.
This Ford Mustang II is one of approximately 5,000 examples equipped with the King Cobra package for the 1978 model year and was sold new by Northtown Ford Sales of Willowdale, Ontario. The car is finished in black over matching vinyl and powered by a 302ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 13″ lacy-spoke aluminum wheels, removable glass T-top panels, unique graphics, a center console, a heater, and a digital clock. Work performed during current ownership has consisted of a chassis refresh and installation of new engine bearings, piston rings, a performance camshaft, an Edelbrock intake manifold, a Holley carburetor, and seals and gaskets. This King Cobra was acquired by the seller in 2010 and is now offered at no reserve in Canada with a Deluxe Marti Report and a Manitoba registration.
The car is said to have been refinished in black in the 1990s and replacement orange pinstriping and King Cobra graphics were applied in 2012. Additional features include a front license plate bracket, sport slat rear window louvers, and removable glass T-top panels. A crack is visible in the front lip spoiler on the right side, and the seller reports that assorted dents and dings are present on multiple body panels.
The 13″ lacy-spoke aluminum wheels were refinished during current ownership and wear Cobra center caps as well as B60-13 Renegade tires with raised white lettering. Power steering and power-assisted front disc brakes were equipped as part of the King Cobra package. The brake master cylinder, handbrake cable, brake lines, and shocks were replaced by the seller in 2016.
The cabin features seats trimmed in black vinyl with patterned cloth inserts and matching dash, door panels, and carpets, the latter of which were replaced during current ownership. Amenities include a heater, a rear window defroster, and a digital clock. Misalignment of the glove compartment door as well as a crack along its lower left edge are visible. Cracks are also present in the driver’s seat, and the heater box is not currently installed, though it is included in the sale.
A three-spoke steering wheel frames a tachometer and a 180-km/h speedometer along with gauges for fuel level, amperage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 5k kilometers (~3k miles). Total mileage is unknown.
The 302ci V8 was fitted with replacement engine bearings, piston rings, a performance camshaft, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and a Holley carburetor approximately 500 kilometers ago. The fuel tank and sending unit have also been replaced, and a custom exhaust system that utilizes the stock manifolds and Thrush mufflers is installed. The car was reportedly equipped with an automatic transmission when purchased by the seller and subsequently converted back to a four-speed manual. Second gear is said to be difficult to engage. The chassis has been sandblasted and repainted in black by the seller. Additional underside photos are viewable in the gallery below.
The Deluxe Marti Report lists a build date of February 10, 1978 and shows production statistics as well as factory colors and options. T-top storage bags and a full-size spare are also included in the sale.
