Description
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic audio signal and subtitle selection feature such that the users are automatically offered an alternative audio and subtitle set in a given genre and/or channel.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for setting personal viewing preferences including audio signal and subtitle selection from among a plurality of alternatives may become inefficient to the extent that they are simply unperformable in a time-saving manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, channel surfing might almost take one hour before every single channel is glanced at least once. It is to be noted that a plurality of channels from different countries may be broadcasted in a multitude of languages and subtitles and while setting specific preferences for a certain program genre in a certain channel is desirable, another set of audio signal and subtitle may be of preference for another program genre irrespective of the name of the channel.
Accordingly, individual viewing preferences of users can be better processed and more relevant program content can be offered to the user without losing the processing time spent in setting a plurality of parameters on a continual basis.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as EP1814249, which defines a method for selecting broadcast stations broadcasting in a language desired for viewing by a user as a list out of the broadcast stations for broadcasting with multiple audios. A channel scan is performed to airwaves over the entire frequency band, language information codes included in the airwaves transmitted from the broadcast stations are identified and stored by a microcontroller, and the broadcast stations are classified by the language information code and displayed as a list so as to easily grasp the broadcast stations for broadcasting in the language desired for viewing by the user.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that users are automatically offered an alternative set of audio signal stream as well as subtitle data in a genre-specific and/or channel-specific manner. The present invention therefore solves the technical problem of accelerating individual processing of the parameters for each program in a manner pertinent or non-pertinent to the specific channel being viewed, by which an automatically generated set of audio signal and subtitle data streams is offerable.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to automatically switch to an automatically generated set of audio signal and subtitle data streams upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically switches to an automatically generated set of audio signal and subtitle data streams upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions.
The present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, having an electronic memory and an automatic switch function button. Said method have the steps of, receiving categorical information of different programs in different channels, storing a database of categorical information of different programs in different channels, including total watching duration of each program in a given category for each channel and in connection with a specific set of audio signal and subtitle data streams, determining the category of a given program being watched on a given channel upon pressing of said automatic switch function button, determining the set of audio and subtitle languages having the highest priority in the actual category and automatically switching to the set of audio signal and subtitle data streams that has the longest watching duration in the actual program category.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of automatic switching to an alternative set of audio signal and subtitle data streams.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes different tasks associated with the automatic switch function button according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a user to reach a set of audio signal and subtitle data streams according to her/his personal preferences without having to manually spend a significant amount of time in an effort to individually set audio signal and subtitle data stream parameters for each program in different channels.
It is known that digital broadcasting services generally provide information in regards to the genre of the programs being watched. The genre information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let the users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program. Further, the actual subtitles and audio descriptions are provided by the content makers in a manner to be individually selectable from among a plurality of alternatives. However, in this case, the user will need to manually configure the preferred audio stream and subtitle by selecting the respective menu of the interface, which is not easily directly accessible in certain cases, and must repeat the same action for each program in order for assigning a non-default set of audio signal and subtitle data streams to a program being viewed.
Alternatively, it is also possible that a user herself/himself arranges a predefined list comprising a plurality of programs assigned to various program genres. In both cases, the image display device may have a database of various programs categorized in the form of a plurality of program genres indicative of the contextual character of the given program and associated with a given channel.
To this end, the image display device of the present invention is fitted with an internal memory so as to store the channel-specific and program-pertinent information including total watching duration of each program in a respective category for each channel and also in connection with a specific set of audio signal and subtitle data streams. More precisely, total watching duration in a certain category and the respective audio signal and subtitle data languages are known for each category in general and in a channel-specific manner.
In this way, an automatic switch function associated with a respective TV panel or remote control button is performed such that the image display device automatically switches to another set of audio signal and subtitle data streams that has the highest priority in the actual program category. Alternatively, a category that has the highest priority in the actual program category for the specific channel being viewed can also be determined.
A category having the highest priority is determined by comparing total watching duration data of all the TV channels as these were broadcasting in the category of the program being currently watched. For instance, when a given user watches a football match in Channel A and presses the automatic switch button, all the channels’ viewing statistics are processed and the set of audio and subtitle languages having the longest watching duration in the sport category is determined, and the image display device automatically switches to, for instance the Turkish language as the audio signal stream with no accompanying subtitles as this set of support media data had the highest priority in the actual sport program category. Alternatively, a set of audio and subtitle languages that has the highest priority in the actual program category for the specific channel being viewed can also be determined. For instance, a user may view a football match on an Italian channel and due to the fact that no Turkish subtitles and/or audio streams are available on this channel, he watches the match with the English audio stream and no subtitles. Therefore, when the alternative automatic switch function is called, preferably by double-pressing the respective button, the set of audio stream and subtitle data that has the highest priority specific to that channel is automatically selected.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, said image display device comprising an internal memory and an automatic switch function button, said method for operating said image display device comprising the steps of: a) receiving at least one category characterizing the content of a program in the form of a content identifier describing the contextual category of an event or a program, b) storing on said internal memory a database of categories in respect of a plurality of programs associated with a given channel in the form of channel-specific program-pertinent information, including total watching duration data of all channels in different categories and in connection with a specific set of audio signal and subtitle data streams c) determining category of a given program being watched on a given channel upon activation of said automatic switch function button, d) determining the set of audio and subtitle languages having the highest priority in the actual category, and e) automatically switching to the set of audio signal and subtitle data streams that has the longest watching duration in the actual program category.
According to an embodiment of the invention, after said automatic switch function is called by pressing the respective button, after the program category being watched is determined and an automatically defined prioritized set of audio and subtitle stream is selected, said automatic switch button can be re-pressed to perform an alternative automatic switch function, upon which the next prioritized set of audio and subtitle stream that has the highest priority specific to that channel is automatically selected.
In a further embodiment of the invention, said image display device is operable such that if said automatic switch button is hold pressed, all the prioritized sets of audio and subtitle streams are then visually listed so as to be selectable.
In this regard, the invention ensures that a user will not need to manually configure the preferred audio stream and subtitle by selecting the respective menu of the interface, which is not always easily and directly accessible. The same action for each program in order for assigning a non-default set of audio signal and subtitle data streams to the program being viewed is hence not repeated.
