DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[015] Embodiments of the present invention shall now be described in detail, with reference to the attached drawings. It is to be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended, such alterations and further modifications in the illustrated device, and such further applications of the principles of the invention as illustrated therein being contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
[016] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of a good genuineness verification system 100 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. The system includes a verification module deployed on a mobile communication device 104, and a verification system 115. The mobile communication device 104 is able to connect to the verification system 115 through a communication network 110, such as Internet. The mobile communication device 104 is a personal communication device owned by a user 102. Such personal communication device can be a smart phone or any personal handheld device that is able to establish wireless communications with the verification system 115 through the communication network
110.
[017] The verification module can be a software program or mobile application obtainable from a trusted source to deploy on the mobile communication device 104. Once the verification module 104 is deployed, it can be used to verify the genuineness of a good accordingly. In one illustrative example, the user 102 who carries the mobile communication device 104 may utilize the verification module deployed therein to verify if a good 106 is genuine. When in used, the user 102 launches the verification module on the mobile communication device 104, and scans a label 108 attached on the good 106. The label 108 can be scanned through an optical means integrated on the mobile communication device 104, such as a camera. Preferably, the label 108 should contain at least an identification code and a verification code. It is desired that the identification code and the verification code two distinct code provided on the label 108. The identification code can be encoded into a machine-readable representation, such as barcode, quick response (QR) code, or the like.
[018] Preferably, the identification code and the corresponding verification code are unique to each individual good.
[019] Once the label is scanned, the verification module extracts at least an identification code and transmits the same to the verification system 115 through the communication network 110. The verification system 115 retrieves a verification code that corresponds to the identification code and returns the same to the mobile communication device 104. The verification code is then presented on a display screen of the mobile communication device 104, and user may then visually verify if the verification code provided on the label matches the verification code extracted directly from the verification system 115.
[020] The verification code can be a series of alphanumeric characters printed on the label that allows users to carrying out the visual verification.
[021] In one alternative embodiment, both scanning and verification of the label can be done automatically by the verification module on the mobile communication device 104. In this case, the mobile communication device 104 captures an image of the label 108 through its camera and processes the same to extract the identification code from the label in order to retrieve a corresponding verification code from the verification system 115. At the same time, the verification module performs a character recognition technique to extract the verification code printed on the label 108 through the image directly. The character recognition technique can be any known OCR or the like. Once the verification code is retrieved from the verification system 115, it is digitally compared against the verification code printed on the label 108 for matching. When it is found matched, the verification module prompts the user that the good is verified to be genuine.
[022] In yet a further embodiment, the verification code can also be encoded as a separate machine-readable representation.
[023] In a further embodiment, the image of the label 108 captured by the camera of the mobile communication device 104 may be transmitted to the verification system 115 for verification. The verification system 115 shall then extract the identification code and the verification code from the image and carry out the verification and matching on the verification system 115. Once it is verified, the verification system 115 responds to user 102 accordingly through the mobile communication device 104.
[024] It yet a further embodiment, the identification code is provided at a distinct location from the verification code on the good.
[025] It is also desired that the trusted source is the manufacturer of the associated goods, or it can be a trusted good verification provider affiliated with the manufacturer. In the case where the trusted source is the manufacturer, the manufacturer that maintains a database of the identification codes and their corresponding verification codes of the goods. In the case where the trusted source is the trusted good verification provider, the provider maintains a database of the identification codes and their corresponding verification codes of the goods from all the affiliated manufacturers. One advantage of having a trusted good verification provider as the trusted source is that users are required to obtain the verification module from one source only, rather than deploying proprietary verification modules from the respective manufacturers. In some cases, the verification module can be obtained from through a trusted digital distribution provider, such as the Apple App Store developed and maintained by Apple Inc.
[026] It is to be noted that the present invention shall avoid deploying any generic software or application, such as QR code reader, wherein these solutions rely on information that are extracted directly through machine readable code, and the information extracted therefrom will automatically connect to a remote verification site to verified the validity of the extracted information, and return with a verification result. As the user has no knowledge or information regarding the connection to the verification source, such verification may not reliable. Consumer may still be deceived when the scanned label and the verification site are all counterfeited. Therefore, it is an objective of the present invention to provide an authentic, genuine verification source and a verification module that connects to the authentic verification source for a reliable verification results.
[027] FIG. 2 illustrates a flow chart of a good genuineness verification process in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Briefly, the process includes launching verification module at step 202; scanning a label of a good to verify at step 204; transmitting an identification code to a verification server at step 206; identifying the identification code from a database at step 208; when identification code is found, determining if the good is sold at step 209; when the good is not sold, retrieving a verification code at step 210; transmitting the verification code and identities of the good to user at step 212; displaying verification code and the identities of the goods at step 214; verifying the verification code retrieved from the database at step 216; when the identification code does not match any records the step 208, the good is identifies as not found at step 218; transmitting the identification result to verification module at step 220; displaying that the good is not found at step 222; when the good is determined as sold at the step 209, transmitting the good sold status to verification module at step 224; and displaying that the good is sold at step 226.
[028] In carrying out the process, a user must first obtain and deploy the verification module on his/her mobile communication device. When in use, the user need to first launch the verification module on the mobile communication device in the step 202. FIG. 3A illustrates a first screen shot 300 of the verification module that displays on the mobile communication device. As shown in the screen shot, the verification module prompts the user to scan the label 302 of the good to be verified. The user will be require to point the camera equipped on the mobile communication device at the label 302 of the good to capture an image thereof. The screen on the mobile communication device provides a window 304 that gives a live view of what the camera is capturing. Through the aid of the window 304, at the step 204, the user may scan the label 302 by capturing an image thereof through a capture button 306. As illustrated, the label comprises, a barcode 307 and a verification code 308. The verification module processes the image to extract the identification code from the barcode 307. Scanning and extracting information from the barcode through a digital camera are well known in the art and therefore, it will not be illustrated further herein.
[029] Once the identification code is obtained, the verification module transmits the same automatically to the verification server at the step 206 through a communication network. The verification server then identifies if the identification code can be found on records at the step 208. If the identification code does not match with any that stored in the database, it indicates that the good cannot be found on the database at the step 218. The verification system transmits the identification results to the verification module of the user's device at the step 220, and the result is displayed on the device 222. It accordingly shows that the good to be verified is likely to be a counterfeit good. Another possibility of such scenario would be that the manufacturer is not affiliated with the verification system.
[030] Returning to the step 208, when the identification code is identified matching with the verification system's records, the system further checks if the good has already been sold on records at the step 209. When the product is determined to be sold at the step 209, the good's sale status will be transmitted to the to user's device at the step 224 and displayed to the user at the step 226. In such case, user should be alerted the good to be purchased is supposed to be a new one.
[031] Returning to the step 209, when the good has not yet been sold, i.e. a new good, the verification server retrieves the corresponding verification code from its database at the step 210, and transmits the same to the verification module at the step 212. The verification code 352 received from the verification server is then displayed on the screen as shown in the FIG. 3B. At the step 216, the user then matches the verification code 352 shown on the mobile communication device against the verification code 308. It they match, the good is verified to be a genuine good, which otherwise, a counterfeit good.
[032] As illustrates in FIG. 3B, the verification server may further transmit other information regarding the good that associated to the verification code found to the verification module. The information may include a photo or image of the good 354, and good identities. The good identifies may include a good serial number, date of manufacture, country of origin, the authorized shop to sell the good, status of the good, etc. This information may further assist the user to verify if the good is genuine. If any of this information does not match the actual good, it may indicate likelihood that the product is a counterfeit good.
[033] As users obtained the verification module themselves, there is no concern on the integrity of the verification module as long as it was obtained through a trusted source. [034] While specific embodiments have been described and illustrated, it is understood that many changes, modifications, variations, and combinations thereof could be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the invention.
