Abstract

An integrated user interface system (360) being disposed at a chair (382) and methods for manufacturing and using same. The user interface system comprises one or more interface elements (366) that are disposed at an armrest (388) or other suitable chair location and that are obscured from view or otherwise de - emphasized when a user is distal from the user interface system. At least one selected interface element becomes emphasized when a user hand becomes proximate to the user interface system. The selected interface element can become emphasized, for example, by becoming visible and/or by forming a raised projection. Upon becoming emphasized, the selected interface element is activated for use and can be manipulated to interact with available system resources. The chair (382) advantageously can appear to be an ordinary chair when the user interface system is not in use and can present the user interface system when the user wishes to access the system resources.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 02 April 2012 (02.04.2012) What is claimed is:
1. An integrated user interface system (360) suitable for use at a user chair (382), comprising;
a plurality of interface elements (366) being provided at a chair region of the user chair (382), said interlace elements (366) being de-emphasized and disabled from use when a user is disial from the user chair (382), one or more selected interface elements becoming emphasized and activated for use when the user is proximate to the user chair (382).
2. The user interface system (360) of claim 1,
wherein said interface elements (366) are obscured from view when a hand of the user is distal from the user interface system (360) such that the user chair (382) appears to be an ordinary chair that does not include the user interface system (360); and
wherein said selected interface elements become visible when the hand of the user approaches said interface elements (366).
3. The user interface system (360) of claim 1 or claim 2,
wherein said integrated user interface system (360) is associated with one or more system resources (110), the system resources (110) optionally being made available by way of an information system (100);
wherein said selected interface elements, upon becoming emphasized, can be manipulated to enable interaction with at least one selected system resource;
wherein said selected interface elements, upon becoming deemphasized, optionally is inhibited from interacting with the system resources (1 10); and
wherein said integrated user interface system (360) is utilized in conjunction with at least one of a video interface system (362) and an audio interface system (364) for presenting content available from the selected system resource, said video interface system (362) optionally presenting a hierarchical menu system (262) with a plurality of menu levels each providing control indicia (262 Y) being associated with system functions available via the system resources ( 1 10), said selected interface elements being mapped to the control indicia (262Y) to enable navigation of the optional menu system (262) via said integrated user interface system (360).

4. The user interface system (360) of any one of the above claims, wherein said chair region comprises at least one of a left armrest (388L), a right armrest (388R), a chair back, and a tray table of the user chair (382);
wherein selected interface elements optionally becoming visible by at least one of projecting from said chair region, becoming illuminated, presenting control indicia (262Y), and presenting al least one function icon (367) that represents a preselected control function associated with said selected interface elements, the optional function icon (367) being programmable;
wherein said selected interface elements optionally remain visible while the hand of the user is adjacent to the user interface system (360) and become obscured when the hand of the user withdraws from the user interface system (360); and
wherein said selected interface elements optionally provide a chair control interface for controlling a chair feature of the user chair (382), the optional chair control interface controlling at least one of a headrest position, a footrest position, an armrest position, a chair back recline angle, a lumbar support position, a chair elevation, a chair swivel angle, an in-chair massage system, an audio volume level, a light brightness level, in-chair and an in-chair temperature control system.
5. The user interface system (360) of any one of the above claims, wherein said interface elements (366) arc disposed in a matrix arrangement (366MAT); wherein said selected interface elements comprise a portion of said interface
elements (366), said interface elements (366) optionally including a plurality of boundary interface elements (366BND) that become emphasized to define a boundary that at least partially surrounds said selected interface elements when the hand of the user approaches the user interface system (360);
wherein at least one of said interface elements (366) optionally comprises a capacitive button for detecting an approach of the hand of the user prior to actual contact with said touch point;
wherein the user interface system (360) further comprises an optional proximity sensor for detecting an approach of the hand of the user prior to actual contact with said selected interface elements;
wherein said interface elements (366) optionally include at least one of a touch pad interface element (366TCH), a gaming interface element (366GAME), a gamer D-pad interface element, a chair control interface element, a pointer control interface element (360PNT), and a rectangular grid interface element;
wherein a plurality of said interface elements (366) optionally form a composite interface element, said optional composite interface element comprising at least one o f a touch pad system (366TCH), a gaming interface system (366GAME), a gamer D-pad system, a chair control system, a pointer control system (360PNT), a rectangular grid system, and a telephone keypad system; and
wherein, if at least one of said interface elements (366) forming said optional composite interface element becomes unavailable, a position of said optional composite interface element within said matrix arrangement (366MAT) is dynamically adjusted to avoid said unavailable-said interface elements.
6. The user interlace system (360) of any one of the above claims, wherein said selected interface elements comprise virtual interface elements, an optional projection system (500) projecting said virtual interface elements onto said chair region;
wherein said projection system (500) optionally projects said virtual interface elements onto respective areas of a touch film interface system disposed at said chair region, a selected area of said touch film interface system detecting an approach of the hand o f the user and acruating an associated virtual interface element prior to actual contact with said chair region;
wherein said optional projection system (500) optionally projects said virtual interlace elements onto respective areas of said chair region, an optional camera system (520) detecting the hand of the user approaching a selected area of said chair region and actuating an associated virtual interface clement prior to actual contact with said chair region; and
wherein said optional projection system (500) optionally projects viewing content onto said chair region.
7. The user interlace system (360) of any one of the above claims,
wherein said selected interface element comprises a pointer control interface
system (360PNT);
wherein said pointer control interface system (360PNT), upon becoming emphasized, is manipulated by performing a hand gesture adjacent to said pointer control interlace
system (360PNT), the hand gesture being associated with a predetermined control function such that the user interface system (360) performs the predetermined control function associated with the performed hand gesture;
wherein said pointer control interface system (360PNT) optionally becomes emphasized when a first hand gesture is performed adjacent to said interface elements (366);
wherein said pointer control interface system (360PNT) optionally becomes decmphasized when a second hand gesture is performed adjacent to said pointer control interface system (360PNT).

The user interface system (360) of any one of the above claims, wherein the user chair (382) defines a chair compartment (388A) at least partially defined by a chair region covering (388B) associated with said chair region, the user interface system (360) being disposed within the chair compartment (388A) such that said interface elements (366) are positioned adjacent to the chair region covering (388B) and are obscured by the chair region covering (388B) when the user is distal from the user inter&ce system (360), said selected interface elements becoming emphasized via the chair region covering (388B) when the hand of the user approaches the user interface system (360);
wherein said selected interface elements optionally become emphasized by forming raised projections via the chair region covering (388B), the optional projections providing the user interface system (360) with a tactile feel, the chair region covering (388B) comprising a pliable chair region covering (388B) for enabling formation and manipulation of the optional projections; wherein said selected interface elements optionally become emphasized by providing an observable emphasis, the chair region covering (388B) comprising a translucent chair region covering (388B) for enabling the optional observable emphasis to be visible via the chair region covering (388B); and
wherein the chair region covering (388B) optionally is provided by a material that is the same as a material covering other chair components of the user chair (382).
9. A user chair (382), comprising:
a seat (384D); and
a chair region being coupled with said seat (384D); and
an integrated user interface system (360) being disposed at said chair region and being provided in accordance with any one of- the above claims.
10. The user chair (382) of claim 9,
wherein said chair region comprises left and right armrests (388L, 388R), said seat (384D) being disposed between said left and right armrests (388L, 388R);
wherein said user interface system (360) comprises a first user interface system (360L) disposed at said left armrest (38SL) and a second aser interface system (360R) disposed at said right armrest (388R), each of said first and second user interface systems (360L, 360R) being provided in accordance with any one of claims 1 -8;
wherein said first user interface system (360L) optionally is provided in the same manner as said second user interface system (360R); and
wherein said first user interface system (360L) optionally is provided in a different manner than said second user interface system (360R).
11. An information system (100), comprising:
a plurality of system resources (110) each providing at least one associated resource function;
a user chair (382) having a chair region and an integrated user interface system (360) being disposed at said chair region and being provided in accordance with any one of claims 1-8; and
a distribution system (320) for coupling said user chair (382) with said system resources (1 10), said distribution system (320) optionally comprising at least one of a wired distribution system and a wireless distribution system,
wherein said system resources (1 10) include at least one local system resource that is proximate to said user chair (3S2),
wherein said system resources ( 1 10) optionally include at lease one remote system resource that is distal from said user chair (382), said user chair (382) communicating with said Optional remote system resource via an intermediate communication system (370), said intermediate communication system (370) optionally comprising a satellite (370A), and
wherein said user interface system (360), upon becoming emphasized, can be manipulated to enable interaction with one or more of said system resources (1 10) via said distribution system (320).
12. The information system (100) of claim 1 1 , wherein said information system (100) is suitable for installation aboard a passenger vehicle (390).
13. An aircraft (390B), comprising;
a fuselage (392);
a plurality of passenger chairs (382) arranged within the fuselage (392); and
an information system (100) coupled with said fuselage (392) and being provided in accordance with claim 1 1.
14. A method for manufacturing an integrated user interface system (360), comprising; providing a user chair (382) having a chair region; and
disposing a user interface system (360) at said chair region of said nser chair (382), said user interface system (360) being provided in accordance with any one of claims ] -8.
15. A method for using an integrated user interface system (360) being disposed at a chair region of a user chair (382), the user interface system (360) being provided in accordance with any one of claims 1-8 and including a plurality of interface elements (366) being provided at said chair region, comprising:
enabling the interface elements (366) to be de-emphasized when a user is distal from the user interface system (360); and
enabling one or more selected interface elements to become emphasized when a hand of the user approaches the user interface system (360).
