Abstract

This invention relates to an article of furniture including a power supply. Description

AN ARTICLE OF FURNITURE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an article of furniture including a power supply.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Power supply units such as back-up or emergency power supply units are normally housed in metal or plastics casings and are not appealing for use as articles of furniture and are normally hidden out of site.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide an article of furniture that alleviates the abovementioned difficulty.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided an article of furniture comprising a housing having an outer housing covering power supply equipment. There is provided for the outer housing to be a material covering such as upholstery or fabric, such as, but not limited to fabric or leather.
A further feature of the invention provides for the power supply equipment to include a battery, an inverter, a power supply plug.
These and other features of the invention are described in more detail below.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One embodiment of the invention is described below by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an article of furniture; and
Figure 2 shows a rear view of the article of furniture of figure 1 of the rear panel thereof removed.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
With reference to the drawings an article of furniture is generally indicated by reference numeral one. In this embodiment the article of furniture is an ottoman having substantially square sides to form a cube with six panels having cladding 2 on the outer surface of each panel 4.
Power supply equipment in the form of batteries 5, an inverter 9 and a charger controller 10, plug outlet 6, an inlet cable 8 terminating in a main plug 7 and cables between the inverter, charge controller and batteries are located within the housing formed by the ottoman 1.
The cable 8 is connected to a plug 7, which can be plugged into a main power supply outlet socket. The other end of the cable 8 extends through an opening in a bottom panel 4 of the ottoman 1 and to the charge controller 10. The charge controller 10 has cables 11 connected to the batteries 5.
Cables 12 are connected between the batteries 5 and the inverter 9. A cable 10 runs from the inverter 9 towards a three point outlet plug 6.
In use plug 7 is plugged into a mains outlet socket so that the batteries 5 are charged through the charge controller 10. Appliances such as television sets and the like may be powered from outlet plug 6 if required. However, the real purpose of the ottoman 1 is to supply power from the batteries that are charged by the charge controller 10 through the inverter at plug 6 in case of mains power failure. During mains power failure appliances may thus be run from the batteries 5 of the ottoman 1 until the batteries run flat.
It is envisaged that the article of furniture described herein will provide a convenient back-up or emergency power supply in case of mains power failure. The article of furniture may be used as an ottoman or a pedestal table as its outer surfaces may be aesthetically pleasing. The ottoman 1 may also form part of a set of articles of furniture some of which may also include power supply equipment and some of which may not.
The invention is not limited to precise details as described herein and other embodiments are possible without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the upholstery or fabric the material covering is made of may be of any kind of fabric, such as leather.

Claims

1. An article of furniture comprising a housing having an outer housing covering power supply equipment.
2. An article of furniture as claimed in claim 1 in which the outer housing is a material covering.
3. An article of furniture as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the covering is upholstery or fabric.
4. An article of furniture as claimed in claim 2 in which the material covering is leather.
5. An article of furniture as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the power supply equipment includes a battery, an inverter, a power supply plug.
6. An article of furniture as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the housing forms an ottoman.
