Abstract

A communication network (fig. IA) includes a base station (105), a relay station 1 15-1), and a subscriber station (110-1). The base station is communicatively coupled to a back haul (410-1) for routing one or more messages through the back haul to a destination. The relay station is communicatively coupled to the base station and further communicatively coupled to an alternate back haul. The relay station includes a relay station mode for relaying messages between the base station and the subscriber station, and a base station mode of operation for other messages from the subscriber station through the alternate back haul to the destination. The subscriber station is communicatively coupled to the base station and further communicatively coupled to the base station and further communicatively coupled to relay the station.
