Abstract

A light guide (30) for use with a backlit display (100), and a method of manufacturing the same is disclosed. The light guide (30) has an array of light control features (32) mechanically machined into its surface during manufacture to scatter light within the light guide (30) so that it passes out of the light guide (30) to illuminate the backlit display (100). Light is introduced to the light guide (30) from light boxes (50) containing light sources. Each light source is joined to a coupling element (52) to increase efficiency of light entry into the light guide (30) and to increase the amount of light directed toward the light control features (32).
