Abstract

The present invention provides for the discovery of an Internet Protocol (IP) address of an application server (204) associated with an IP network. An IP (202) device is granted access to an IP network. Access to the IP network assumes an IP address assignment (220) for the IP device. The network domain name is discovery by performing a Reverse DNS query (230) on the assigned IP address or an IP address associated with the IP network device granting access to the IP device. Using a application server domain name (derived from the network domain name) a DNS query (250) is perform to determine all IP addresses associated with the application server domain name.

+ STATEMENT
What is claimed is:
1. A method of determining an Internet Protocol (EP) address of an application server of a serving network, comprising; receiving an IP address of a requestor; performing a reverse domain name query as a function of the received IP address; receiving a response to the reverse domain name query; deriving serving network domain name information from the reverse domain name query; prefacing an application server name to the derived serving network domain name information; performing a domain name query as a function of the derived serving network domain name prefaced with the application server name; and receiving an IP address as a function of the derived serving network domain name prefaced with the application server name.
2. The method of Claim 1, wherein the step of receiving an IP address further comprises receiving an IP address of user equipment (UE),
3. The method of Claim 1, wherein the step of receiving an IP address further comprising receiving an IP address associated with a device providing IP address to the serving network
4. The method of Claim 3, further comprising transmitting an IP of address of a gateway to the UE.
5. The method of Claim 1, wherein the step of deriving the serving network domain name information from the reverse domain name query further comprises deriving information from a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI),
6. The method of Claim 1, wherein the application server is a Proxy Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF) server name.
7. A user equipment (UE) for determining the application server name associated with a serving network, comprising: means for receiving an IP address; means for receiving a response to a reverse domain name query; means for receiving an IP address as a function of a derived domain name prefaced by an application server name; a memory for storing at least one application server name; a requestor configured to initiate contact to a network; a memory for storing a received IP address requested by the requestor; a reverse domain name system (DNS) query initiator configured to use the contents of the memory for storing the received IP address; a memory for storing reverse DNS query information generated as a result of the reverse DNS query initiator; logic to extract a domain name from the reverse DNS query information; logic to preface at least one application server name to the domain name extracted from the reverse DNS query information; a DNS query initiator configured to transmit the prefaced application server name and domain name extracted from the reverse DNS query information; and memory for storing the IP application of an application server extracted from the reverse DNS query information.
8. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the requestor is configured to request an IP address for theUE.
9. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the requestor is configured to request an IP address associated with a device providing IP address to the serving network,
10. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the logic to extract a domain name from the reverse DNS query information comprises software.
11. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the logic to extract a domain name from the reverse DNS query information comprises hardware,

12. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the at least one application server name comprises a plurality of server names.
13. The UE of Claim 7, wherein the at least one application server name comprises P- CSCE
1 . The UE of Claim 7, wherein the UE comprises an IP capable device.
15. A system for determining an IP address of an application server of a serving network, comprising; an access gateway; a DNS associated with the serving network and coupled to the access gateway; an UE in communication with the visited network, wherein the UE is configured to: request an IP address from the visited network; transmit an IP address of the UE or of the access gateway; receive the requested IP address associated with the UE; receive a response to a reverse domain name query as a function of the received requested IP address; derive domain name information from the reverse domain name query; preface an application server name to the extracted domain name, thereby generating a domain-specific application server name; perform a domain name query as a function of the domain-specific application server name; and receive an IP address as a function of the domain-specific application server name.
16. The system of Claim 15, wherein the serving network has a universal resource URI.
17. The system of Claim 15, wherein the requestor is configured to request an IP address for the UE.
18. The system of Claim 15, wherein the requestor is configured to request an IP address associated with a device providing IP address to the serving network.

19. The system of Claim 18, further comprising transmitting an IP of address of a gateway to the UE.
20. The system of Claim 15, wherein the logic to extract a domain name from the reverse DNS query.
