Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person (P), comprising the steps of : a) receiving a telephone call (V) from a telephone equipment (T); b) on the basis of information associated to and/or contained in said telephone call, identifying: - the telephone number of said equipment (T),-the identity of said person (P); c) retrieving from an electronic archive (C) emergency health information relating to said person (P) on the basis of the identified identity; d) generating at least one text message (S) containing the full set or a subset of the retrieved information; e) sending the or each generated text message (S) to said equipment (T) using a telephone messaging system and the identified telephone number. The present invention also relates to a system specifically adapted to carry out this method.

Description

METHOD and SYSTEM for PROVIDING EMERGENCY HEALTH
INFORMATION
The present invention relates to a method and a system for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person. In many emergency situations, it is often necessary to have emergency health information (e.g. drug allergies, pathologies, ...) for treating, from the medical point of view, a person without the risk of causing further damages to his health; additionally, such information is extremely useful in order to give the best aid as soon as possible; such emergency situations may be caused by man (e.g. accidents, attacks, ...) or by nature (e.g. sudden illness, landslide, ...). The need for such emergency health information is especially high just in the place where an emergency situation occurs and a first-aid is to be given. Unfortunately such need is often left unsatisfied particularly in those cases when the person to be treated is either in a state of unconsciousness or unable to provide himself such information, as e.g. in the case of children or very old people.
In the past, in order to solve this problem, medical cards were conceived adapted to be kept e.g. in a wallet and to bear the main emergency health information in printed form. This solution has the disadvantage that the room available for printed information on such cards is quite limited; additionally, such cards are not suitable for those persons who travel a lot due to a language problem; even if the information is printed in English, the rescuer may be an ordinary person who does not know English.
An alternative to the above mentioned printed card is a medical card comprising memory means (magnetic, optic, electronic, ...) adapted to store emergency health information. In this way, both the problem relating to room and the problem relating to language are solved; but there is a problem relating to the card reading; in fact, in order to read the card, special means are requested that are unlikely to be available in the place of the emergency especially if the rescuer is an ordinary people.
For the sake of completeness, it must be remembered that there have been existing for some time various electronic archives storing more o less specialized health information, managed by various entities and accessible via the internet through appropriate access keys. Such archives may be very useful when the person to be treated is in a ward of an hospital (typically in casualty or emergency room) but useless when the person to be treated is still in the place of the emergency as they require a computer system having wired or wireless access to the internet, which is unlikely to be the case for first-aid vehicles and persons in very many countries of the world.
Therefore, it is the object of the present invention to provide a method for providing emergency health information that overcomes the drawbacks of the prior art solutions.
This object is achieved through a method having the functionalities set out in independent claim n°l .
The basic idea underlying the present invention is to provide an automatic system that provides emergency health information relating to a person to be aided in the form of telephone text messages, e.g. SMS, when the system receives a telephone call containing or associated to appropriate identification information of that person.
The method according to the present invention requires only that the person to be aided has with him a card or a tag bearing the telephone number of the automatic system and some suitable personal identification information of himself, and that the person that aids or rescues has with him a normal mobile telephone, e.g. GSM or UMTS, or a fixed telephone able to receive text messages; therefore, it can be used at any time, in any place and in almost all countries of the world.
Advantageously, text messages remains stored in the telephone and therefore may be easily read again by the same person (if forgotten) or by other persons.
Additionally, the system is particularly suitable to be used when travelling; in fact, it is simple to provide a change of language.
Advantageous functionalities of the method according to the present invention are set out in the claims dependent directly or indirectly on claim n°l.
According to another aspect, the present invention also relates to a system for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person, having the features set out in independent claim n°15.

The present invention will become clearer from the following description to be considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l schematically shows an emergency situation and an application of the present invention, and
Fig.2 schematically shows a system according to the present invention.
With reference to Fig.l, a person P lies on the ground in an emergency situation due e.g. to an accident or a sudden illness; another person R, that can be an ordinary person or a first-aider, is standing there and is trying to rescue and/or aid person P; person R has a telephone T, specifically a mobile phone; somewhere else, far away from the place of the emergency, there is a system C according to the present invention, specifically a computer system with appropriate communication means for communicating with telephones and memory means for storing health information.
The method according to the present invention will be explained hereafter with reference to Fig. l; this reference should not be interpreted in a limitative sense.
The method according to the present invention allows to automatically provide emergency health information relating to a person, P in Fig.l; it comprises the steps of : a) receiving a telephone call, symbolically shown in Fig. l and labelled with reference N, from a telephone equipment, T in Fig.1 ; b) on the basis of information associated to and/or contained in said telephone call V, identifying :
- the telephone number of said equipment T, the identity of said person P; c) retrieving from an electronic archive, in Fig.l comprised in a computer system C, emergency health information relating to said person P on the basis of the identified identity; d) generating at least one text message, S in Fig.l, containing the full set or a subset of the retrieved information; e) sending the or each generated text message S to said equipment T using a telephone messaging system and the identified telephone number.
In Fig. l, the emergency health information relating to person P are provided to person R through the mobile telephone T; the emergency health information are contained in three text messages S, specifically three SMS.
In Fig.l, the method is carried out by a computer system C that is provided with communication means for communicating with telephones (including telephone
T) and with memory means for storing the electronic archive; the computer system of Fig.l is a Personal Computer but the system can be much more complicated depending on the system requirements as will be better explained in the following.
The method according to the present invention requires only that person P has with him a card or a tag bearing the telephone number of system C and some suitable personal identification information of himself (to be provided to system
C) and that person R has with him a normal mobile telephone, e.g. GSM or
UMTS, or a fixed telephone able to receive text messages; therefore it can be used at any time, in any place and in almost all countries of the world. Instead of a printed card or a punched/stamped tag, even a simple hand-written piece of paper would be sufficient.
Advantageously, text messages S remains stored in telephone T and therefore may be easily read again by person R (if forgotten) or by other persons, such as e.g. professional first-aiders or doctors.
It would be much better for person R if the telephone number of system C would be a toll free number; anyway, this would partially limit the possibility of receiving emergency health information only to those countries where a dedicated toll free number has been established.
Emergency health information may be subdivided into several categories, for example: Emergency Contacts, Diseases, Surgeries, Drugs and Therapies,
Foreign Bodies, Missing Organs and Implanted Devices, Allergies and
Immunizations, Images, General.
In the case of emergency health information, Emergency Contacts may comprise e.g. related physician and his telephone number, related specialist and his telephone number, additional contacts (e.g. relatives or friends and their telephone numbers), Diseases may comprise e.g. heart disease, asthma, immunodeficiency, Surgeries may comprise e.g. heart transplant, kidney transplant, lung surgery, by-pass, Drugs & Therapies may comprises e.g. chemotherapy, hypertension drugs, dialysis, Foreign Bodies may comprise e.g. needle, coin, bone, Missing Organs & Implanted Devices may comprise e.g. spleen, kidney, insulin delivery system, Allergies & Immunizations may comprise e.g. foods allergies, vegetables allergies (e.g. pollen allergy), drug allergies, hepatitis A immunization, Images may comprise e.g. cardiogram or ECG; the General category may comprise things such as the permission to give organs in case of death, the permission to be resuscitated, the permission to be blood transfused.
The electronic archive may contain not only emergency health information but other health information such as medical information, e.g. information relating to many diseases, therapies and surgeries.
According to the present method, it is not necessary to send all emergency health information relating to a person but at least those pieces of emergency health information that are most likely to be useful in the place of the emergency (highlight data); further (emergency or not) health information may be collected when the person arrives e.g. in the hospital by other means, as will be explained later.
If the quantity of information to be provided through the telephone messaging system is large, it is advisable to divide the retrieved information into information packets and to generate and send a distinct text message for each of said packets. In order to increase the reliability of the method, it can provided that each of said packets contains a self-subsisting subset of the retrieved information; in this way, even if a packet is lost by the telephone network what is received by telephone T can be perfectly read and understood by person R and the result of the message loss would only be an incomplete set of emergency health information; additionally, whatever would be the order of reception and/or storage of the text messages by telephone T, person R would be able to read and understand the emergency health information without difficulties.
Nowadays, in some countries, telephone text messages have become very popular mostly between teenagers as a form of amusing and cheap communication; on the contrary, the present invention proposes a very serious application of these messages.
Till now the type of telephone text messages most used is SMS; this type of message can contain only text.
Another type of telephone text messages that has just started to be used is
MMS; this type of message can contain also pictures in addition to text; for the present invention pictures may also be useful: if the picture of person P is received by person R, person R may immediately check that the emergency health information received belong to the right person, some emergency health information may be better represented by a picture instead of a text.
The two above mentioned types of messages are the one made available by
GSM; UMTS will make available other kinds of telephone text messages. The present invention is not restricted to the type of text messages.
One of the important thing of the method according to the present invention is to identify the identity of the person whose emergency health information are necessary. The most easy and safe way is to receive a code that uniquely identifies that person; preferably the code is a numerical code, that can be called a "Personal Identification Number" (PIN), as it can be easily input through the keyboard of a telephone. The numerical code can be easily printed on a card or punched/stamped on a tag borne by that person in a more or less visible way, so that there is no need to discover the true identity of that person from his identity card or his passport.
During the initial telephone call, person R may advantageously be prompted to input the code by a voice message; in this case, step a) of the method according to the present invention comprises sending to telephone equipment T a voice message requesting a personal identification code.
This voice message can be in a fixed and predetermined language, preferably in
English; in this case, the fixed language is expected to be understood by person
R. Alternatively, this voice message can be in a language determined on the basis of the telephone number of telephone equipment T that has started the initial telephone, call; as will be better explained later, this is likely to be the mother language of person R. This voice message can also be in two different languages, one after the other, so as to increase the probability that person R understands it.
Another possibility is that this voice message is in a pre-selected language; in this case, the language selection is carried out by person R himself during the initial telephone call and therefore should be understood by person R. Another important thing of the method according to the present invention is to identify the telephone number of telephone equipment T that has started the initial telephone call.
Modern telephone networks and exchanges provide to the receiving telephone equipment the telephone number of the calling telephone equipment (usually the full number comprised of national code, local code and number) at the beginning of the telephone call; in this case, it is easy to identify that number for its further use. The telephone number of a telephone equipment depends either on the telephone card inserted into the equipment (nowadays, mainly for mobile equipments) or on the telephone line to which the equipment is connected (nowadays, for fixed equipments); in any case, it depends on the telephone operator of the country where the telephone card has been bought or the telephone line has been installed.
Anyway, old telephone networks and exchanges do not do that and, even with the new ones, it is usually possible by the owner of a telephone equipment to disable this functionality; therefore, in order to increase the reliability of the method, it is advantageous that step a) of the method according to the present invention comprises sending to equipment T a voice message requesting a telephone number to be used in step e) and then receiving said telephone number. In other words, if the automatic system is unable to identify the telephone number from the beginning of the initial telephone call, during this call, person R will be prompted by the system to input the telephone number of his telephone equipment; person R may indeed provide a different telephone number if, for example, he knows that his telephone equipment is unable to receive telephone text messages.
This last voice message can be in a fixed and predetermined language, preferably in English; in this case, the fixed language is expected to be understood by person R. Alternatively, this last voice message can be in a language determined on the basis of the telephone number of telephone equipment T that has started the initial telephone call; as will be better explained later, this is likely to be the mother language of person R. This last voice message can also be in two different languages, one after the other, so as to increase the probability that person R understands it.
Another possibility is that this last voice message is in a pre-selected language; in this case, the language selection is carried out by person R himself during the initial telephone call and therefore should be understood by person R.
As it has already been clarified, the initial telephone call implies a certain interaction between person R and the automatic system that needs to be carried out vocally; therefore, it may be advantageous that step a) of the method according to the present invention comprises sending to equipment T a voice message requesting a language selection and then receiving a preferably numerical command of language selection. In other words, at the beginning of the initial telephone call, person R will be prompted by the system to input a language selection; person R will probably choose the language with which he is most familiar with. In this case, the rest of the interaction between person R and the automatic system will continue in the so-selected language.
This selection voice message can be in a fixed and predetermined language, preferably in English; in this case, the fixed language is expected to be understood by person R.
Alternatively, this selection voice message can be in a language determined on the basis of the telephone number of telephone equipment T that has started the initial telephone call, more precisely on the basis of the national code comprised in this telephone number, that depends on the country of the telephone operator; this is likely to be the mother language of person R or, at least, a language which he is quite familiar with.
This selection voice message can also be in two or more different languages, one after the other, so as to increase the probability that person R understands it.
If the initial telephone call of step a) according to the present invention is terminated after sending the or each text message of step e), this telephone call may end with a voice message that confirms to person R that the emergency health information service has been completed. This may work as there is always a certain delay (e.g. few seconds) between the time when a telephone text message is sent and the time when the telephone message is received. In this case, the automatic system needs appropriate means for keeping a telephone call active and for sending text messages at the same time.
In addition to or in replacement of steps d) and e), the method according to the present invention may comprise the step of : f) generating and sending a telephone call and/or an e-mail message containing notice information; the telephone number and/or the e-mail address for step f) is retrieved from the electronic archive on the basis of the identified identity; in this way, the emergency situation may be notified e.g. to a doctor of person P or to a family member of person P or to a friend of person P.
According to another aspect, the present invention relates to a system for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person; this system comprises : a) means for receiving a telephone call from a telephone equipment; b) means for identifying, on the basis of information associated to and/or contained in said telephone call :
- the telephone number of said telephone equipment,
- the identity of said person; c) means for retrieving from an electronic archive emergency health information relating to said person on the basis of the identified identity; d) means for generating at least a text message containing the set or a subset of the retrieved information; e) means for sending the or each generated text message to said equipment using a telephone messaging system and the identified telephone number. Clearly, such a system is specifically adapted to carry out the method according to the basic idea of the present invention.
Such a system can be considered a service centre; a person who would like to take advantage of the services of this service centre, pays a fee and receives a card or a tag bearing the telephone number of the service centre and a personal identification code.
If this person has an accident or a sudden illness, he may be better aided by other persons; in fact, whoever aids this person may telephonically contact the service centre and receive emergency health information relating to this person.
In the following, advantageous features of the system according to the present invention will be described that can help in better carrying out the method according to the present invention.
The system according to present invention can further comprise means for dividing the retrieved information into information packets, each of said packets containing a self-subsisting subset of the retrieved information, and means for generating a distinct text message for each of said packets.
The text message(s) can be of SMS type or of MMS type or similar type.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise said electronic archive and programmed electronic means for managing said electronic archive.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise means for receiving preferably numerical codes and/or commands from a telephone equipment.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise means for generating and sending a voice message to a telephone equipment.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise means for generating text messages in different languages.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise means for generating voice messages in different languages.
The 'system according to the present invention can further comprise means for identifying language information from a telephone number associated to a received telephone call. The system according to the present invention can further comprise in addition to or in replacement of means d) and means e) : f) means for retrieving from said electronic archive a telephone number and/or an e-mail address on the basis of the identified identity; and g) means for generating and sending a telephone call and/or an e-mail message. The system according to the present invention can further comprise means for enabling accessing and/or updating said electronic archive through internet or a similar network.
This feature is extremely useful. In fact, the electronic archive may be accessed via the internet by e.g. doctors in case of hospitalisation at any time and wherever in the world; it may provide not only emergency health information but also other health information; additionally, in this way, the family doctor or any other doctor that visits or treats the person may easily updated the archive at any time and wherever in the world.
The system may be further specifically adapted to carry out any combination of functionalities of the method according to the present invention.
The system according to the present invention can further comprise programmable means specifically programmed for carrying out one or more functionalities of the method according to the present invention.
In Fig.2 an embodiment of a system 1 according to the present invention is schematically shown.
System 1 comprises a personal computer 2 provided with a microprocessor 21, a semiconductor memory 22 for programs and data, a database 23 stored in a hard-disk and a network card 24; personal computer 2 may well comprise other components; these are not shown in Fig.2 as they are not strictly pertinent with the present invention; obviously, computer 2 need to be appropriately programmed in order to carry out the method according to the present invention; as it is common practice, such programs are stored on the hard-disk.
System 1 comprises further an INR (Interactive Voice Response) apparatus 3, an SMS gateway apparatus 4, a network switch 5 and a firewall apparatus 6.
All these components are well know (per se) in the art.
SMS gateway apparatus 4 is connected to a SMS centre of a telephone operator through an appropriate wired connection and to INR 3; INR 3 is connected to a telephone exchange through four wired telephone lines but, obviously, the embodiment of Fig.2 is also suitable for a different number of telephone lines.
Network switch 5 is the connection means between computer 2, INR 3 and firewall 6.
Firewall 6 is connected to the internet.
Therefore, the embodiment of Fig.2 is an arrangement of four distinct apparatuses.
Alternatively, the system according to the present invention may be realized using only a personal computer provided with a number of computer cards and a number of software programs; clearly, in this case, the performance of the system are reduced with respect to the embodiment of Fig.2.

Claims

Claims
1. Method for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person (P), comprising the steps of : a) receiving a telephone call (N) from a telephone equipment (T); b) on the basis of information associated to and/or contained in said telephone call, identifying :
- the telephone number of said equipment (T),
- the identity of said person (P); c) retrieving from an electronic archive (C) emergency health information relating to said person (P) on the basis of the identified identity; d) generating at least one text message (S) containing the set or a subset of the retrieved information; e) sending the or each generated text message (S) to said equipment (T) using a telephone messaging system and the identified telephone number.
2. Method according to claim 1, wherein the retrieved information is divided into information packets, each of said packets containing a self- subsisting subset of the retrieved information, and wherein a distinct text message is generated and sent for each of said packets.
3. Method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein a or each text message is of SMS type or MMS type or similar type.
4. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein step a) comprises receiving at least one preferably numerical code that identifies said person.
5. Method according to claim 4, wherein step a) comprises sending to said equipment a voice message requesting a personal identification code.
6. Method according to claim 5, wherein said voice message is in a fixed and predetermined language, preferably in English, and/or in a language determined on the basis of said telephone number.
7. Method according to claim 5, wherein said voice message is in a preselected language.
8. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein step a) comprises sending to said equipment a voice message requesting a telephone number to be used in step e) and then receiving said telephone number.
9. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein step a) comprises sending to said equipment a voice message requesting a language selection and then receiving a preferably numerical command of language selection.
10. Method according to claim 8 or 9, wherein said voice message is in a fixed and predetermined language, preferably in English, and/or in a language determined on the basis of said telephone number.
11. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the or each text message is generated in a fixed and predetermined language or in a preselected language or in a language determined on the basis of said telephone number.
12. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said emergency health information comprises a telephone number.
13. Method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the telephone call of step a) is terminated after sending the or each text message of step e)
14. Method according to any of the preceding claims, comprising in addition to or in replacement of steps d) and e), the step of : f) generating and sending a telephone call and/or an e-mail message containing notice information; and wherein the telephone number and/or the e-mail address for step f) is retrieved from said electronic archive on the basis of the identified identity.
15. System for automatically providing emergency health information relating to a person, comprising : a) means for receiving a telephone call from a telephone equipment; b) means for identifying, on the basis of information associated to and/or contained in said telephone call :
- the telephone number of said telephone equipment,
- the identity of said person; c) means for retrieving from an electronic archive emergency health information relating to said person on the basis of the identified identity; d) means for generating at least a text message containing the set or a subset of the retrieved information; e) means for sending the or each generated text message to said equipment using a telephone messaging system and the identified telephone number.
16. System according to claim 15, further comprising means for dividing the retrieved information into information packets, each of said packets containing a self-subsisting subset of the retrieved information, and means for generating a distinct text message for each of said packets.
17. System according to claim 15 or 16, wherein a or each text message is of SMS type or of MMS type or similar type.
18. System according to any of claims from 15 to 17, further comprising said electronic archive and programmed electronic means for managing said electronic archive.
19. System according to any of claims from 15 to 18, further comprising means for receiving preferably numerical codes and/or commands from a telephone equipment.
20. System according to any of claims from 15 to 19, further comprising means for generating and sending a voice message to a telephone equipment.
21. System according to any of claims from 15 to 20, further comprising means for generating text messages in different languages.
22. System according to any of claims from 15 to 21, further comprising means for generating voice messages in different languages.
23. System according to any of claims from 15 to 22, further comprising means for identifying language information from a telephone number associated to a received telephone call.
24. System according to any of claims from 15 to 23, comprising in addition to or in replacement of means d) and means e) : f) means for retrieving from said electronic archive a telephone number and/or an e-mail address on the basis of the identified identity; and g) means for generating and sending a telephone call and/or an e-mail message.
25. System according to any of claims from 15 to 24, further comprising means for enabling accessing and/or updating said electronic archive through internet or a similar network.
26. System according to any of claims from 15 to 25, further comprising specifically adapted to carry out the method according to any of claims from 1 to 14.
27. System according to any of claims from 15 to 26, further comprising programmable means specifically programmed for carrying out one or more functionalities of the method according to any of claims from 1 to 14.
