Abstract

A wound treatment system having a surgical bandage for treating a wound is provided. The surgical bandage has a wound treatment portion for being placed over a wound and a source of flowable adhesive. A source of flowable adhesive is used to apply an adhesive to the wound treatment portion. The adhesive flows through at least one opening of the wound treatment portion of the surgical bandage to directly contact the wound. A method for treating an open wound is also provided. The method includes the steps of affixing one end of a bandage to one side of the open wound and then pulling one other end of the surgical bandage to substantially close the open wound under direct visualization . The other end of the surgical bandage is affixed to one other side of the now substantially closed wound, before dispensing an adhesive or other substance onto a central portion of the surgical bandage between the two ends of the bandage. The adhesive flows through at least one opening of the central portion to directly contact the now substantially closed wound.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[Received by the International Bureau on 28 June 2004 (28.06.04): original claims 1 to 22 amended;(5 pages)]
1. A surgical bandage comprising: a netting member having a plurality of openings for allowing two way flow of fluid to flow therethrough and adaptable for contouring to a patient's skin; and at least one member having means for substantially closing an open wound by applying a force to at least one edge of the open wound and means for securing the netting member over the closed wound, wherein fluid applied from one side of the netting member opposite the wound flows through the plurality of openings and directly contacts the closed wound on the other side of the netting member and wherein the plurality of openings provide for visualization of the closed wound.
2. The surgical bandage of Claim 1, wherein the means for securing includes a pre-applied adhesive.
3. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the netting member is flexible for contouring to the patient's skin.
4. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , further comprising means for detaching the at least one member by the use of pull strings placed adjacent to the netting member.
5. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the netting member has an adhesive on at least one side.
6. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the netting member includes a transparent material.
7. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the plurality of openings provide for direct visualization of the wound before, during and after closure.
8. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the fluid is selected from the group consisting of a gel, lotion, adhesive, cyanoacrylate, tissue sealant, cream, ointment, fibrin, fibrin-like substance, medicament, anesthetic, antibiotic, wound healing agent, and combinations thereof.
9. The surgical bandage of Claim 1 , wherein the netting member is nonabsorbent.
10. A surgical bandage comprising: a segment having means for allowing a fluid to flow therethrough; and at least one member having means for substantially closing an open wound by applying a force to at least one edge of the open wound and for securing the segment over a wound, wherein fluid applied from one side of the segment opposite the wound is unobstructed by the means for allowing a fluid to flow therethrough and directly contact the wound on another side of the segment.
11. A method for treating an open wound comprising the steps of: affixing one end of a surgical bandage to one side of the open wound; pulling one other end of the surgical bandage in a manner to substantially close the open wound; affixing the other end of the surgical bandage to one other side of the substantially closed wound; visualizing at least a portion of the open wound through a central portion of the surgical bandage; and dispensing onto the central portion of the surgical bandage between the two ends of the surgical bandage a fluid, wherein the fluid flows through at least one unobstructed fluid path of the central portion to directly contact the substantially closed wound.
12. The method according to Claim 11 , further comprising the step of removing at least one of the ends of the surgical bandage by using pull strings placed adjacent to the central portion.
13. The method according to Claim 11, wherein the fluid is a cyanoacrylate.
14. The method according to Claim 11, wherein the central portion is fabricated from a non-absorbent material.
15. The method according to Claim 11 , wherein the non-absorbent material is transparent.
21
16. The method according to Claim 13, wherein the fluid is selected from the group consisting of medicaments, antibiotics, adhesives, saline, gels, lotions, tissue sealants, creams, ointments, fibrin, fibrin-like substances, anesthetics, wound healing agents, and combinations thereof.
17. A wound treatment kit for treating an open wound using a method comprising the steps of: affixing one end of a surgical bandage to one side of the open wound; pulling one other end of the surgical bandage to substantially close the open wound; affixing the other end of the surgical bandage to one other side of the substantially closed wound; and dispensing onto a central portion of the surgical bandage between the two ends of the surgical bandage a fluid, wherein the fluid flows through at least one opening of the central portion directly onto the closed wound.
18. The wound treatment kit according to Claim 17, wherein the method further comprises the step of removing at least one of the two ends of the surgical bandage by using pull strings placed adj cent to the central portion.
19. The wound treatment kit according to Claim 17, wherein the fluid is a cyanoacrylate.
22
20. The wound treatment kit according to Claim 17, wherein the central portion is fabricated from a non-absorbent material.
21. The wound treatment kit according to Claim 17, wherein the non- absorbent material is transparent.
22. The wound treatment kit according to Claim 17, wherein the fluid is selected from the group consisting of medicaments, antibiotics, adhesives, saline, gels, lotions, tissue sealants, creams, ointments, fibrin, fibrin-like substances, anesthetics, wound healing agents, and combinations thereof.
