Abstract

A transfer system for dispensing controlled amounts of liquid. The system including a plurality of reservoirs, each having at least one nozzle commonly provided on a lower side of the reservoir, a plurality of momentum transfer components, each of which is supported for vertical movement in a respective one of the plurality of reservoirs from a rest position in which a lower surface of the transfer component is located within the respective reservoir facing the nozzle, and an actuator provided externally of the reservoir for accelerating the transfer components downwardly relative to the reservoir. The system may simultaneously fill a selected number or all of an array of vessels or to produce a microarray on a substrate surface. A method includes accelerating a transfer component supported in a reservoir from a rest position towards the nozzle and reducing the distance of the component from the nozzle in the rest position.
