Abstract

The invention includes a method and system for defining a transaction. In one embodiment, the inventive method includes capturing characteristics of the transaction on a data network, determining burdens and benefits of the transaction, and determining interdependencies among the characteristics. The inventive method then defines the cost of the network transaction as a function of the characteristics and interdependencies. The inventive method also may identify one or more entities who are burdened or benefited by the transaction, and bill the benefited entity as a function of the burdens, benefits, and characteristics. Also, the inventive method may compensate the burdened entity as a function of the burdens, benefits, and characteristics.
