Abstract

An optical coupler of the prior art has many problems of its large size, high price and serious loss, because at least a polarizing synthesizer, a WDM coupler and excessive optical fibers are necessary for inputting an excited light for the back excitement is inputted to erbium-doped fibers. These problems can be solved by a back exciting optical coupling method and an optical coupler, in which all the WDM coupler function, the polarizing/synthesizing function, the isolator function and the isolator function for protecting the exciting light source are jointly done by one isolator element. The optical coupler comprises: one SMF collimator arranged on the input side of the isolator element; and one SMF collimator and one polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) collimator arranged on the output side, so that the exciting light is inputted from the PMF collimator. With this construction, it is possible to realize a back exciting optical coupler which is packaged in a case having sizes of 41 mm x 25 mm x 7 mm or less.
